Charbhuja Temple

Charbhuja Temple

Shri Charbhuja Temple, situated in the village of Garhbor, Rajsamand district, Rajasthan, is a highly revered shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his four-armed form (Charbhuja literally means “four-armed”).

“चार भुजाओं में छिपी है वो अपार शक्ति, जो भक्त के हर दुःख को क्षण में हर लेती है।”

―Charbhuja Temple

It is one of the most important Vaishnav pilgrimage centers in the Mewar region, drawing thousands of devotees every year.

Mythological Significance & History

The idol of Charbhuja Ji is believed to be over 5,000 years old, connected to the Mahabharata era. Legends say that it was worshipped by the Pandavas before being concealed in a village pond to protect it from invaders after the Mahabharata war.

The current temple was constructed in 1444 AD by the then ruler of Mewar to preserve this idol, and since then it has been maintained by the royal family and the local Charan priests.

Over centuries, the temple was attacked multiple times by invaders, but the locals protected the deity at the cost of their lives.

Significance of the Temple

Charbhuja Ji is considered a kuldevta (family deity) by many Rajput clans, who come here to seek blessings for valor, strength, and prosperity.

Pilgrims believe that darshan of Charbhuja Ji ensures victory over enemies, protection from harm, and spiritual upliftment.

The temple is also a major center for Krishna Bhakti and Vaishnav devotion in Rajasthan.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in a magnificent Rajput architectural style, with impressive marble carvings, mirror work, and silver gates.

It has a towering shikhara (spire) adorned with intricate sculptures of gods and goddesses.

The main sanctum houses the 85-cm tall idol of Charbhuja Ji made of black stone, with four arms holding a conch, discus, mace, and lotus.

The silver doors and grand toran (archway) add to the grandeur of the temple.

The temple complex also features beautifully carved pillars and elaborate mirror work in the inner sanctum.
