antaḥsphūrjadapāramōhatimiraprāgbhāraṃ uchchāṭayan
chētaḥsadmani yōgināṃ vijayatē jñānapradīpō haraḥ ॥ 3.1 ॥

English Meaning: May Lord Hara triumph as the lamp of knowledge in the hearts of yogis, shining with the lovely crescent moon in his matted hair, playfully burning the restless moth of desire and dispelling the immense darkness of delusion within.

bhrāntaṃ dēśaṃ anēkadurgaviṣamaṃ prāptaṃ na kiñchitphalaṃ
tyaktvā jātikulābhimānaṃ uchitaṃ sēvā kṛtā niṣphalā ।
bhuktaṃ mānavivarjitaṃ paragṛhēṣvāśaṅkayā kākavat
tṛṣṇē jṛmbhasi pāpakarmapiśunē nādyāpi santuṣyasi ॥ 3.2 ॥

English Meaning: O thirst for desire, I wandered through many difficult lands without gaining anything, abandoned pride in birth and family, and performed service that proved fruitless. Like a crow, I ate in others’ houses with anxiety. Yet, O desire that drives sinful acts, you still grow and are not satisfied.

mantrārādhanatatparēṇa manasā nītāḥ śmaśānē niśāḥ
prāptaḥ kāṇavarāṭakō’pi na mayā tṛṣṇē sakāmā bhava ॥ 3.3 ॥

English Meaning: O desire, I dug the earth hoping for treasure, smelted the ores of mountains, crossed the ocean, tried to please kings, and spent nights in cremation grounds devoted to mantra worship. Yet I gained not even a single coin. Be satisfied now, together with your desires.

khalālāpāḥ sōḍhāḥ kathaṃ api tadārādhanaparairnigṛhyāntar
bāṣpaṃ hasitaṃ api śūnyēna manasā ।
kṛtō vittastambhapratihatadhiyāṃ añjalirapi
tvaṃ āśē mōghāśē kima aparaṃ atō nartayasi mām ॥ 3.4 ॥

English Meaning: I endured the words of wicked people, forced myself to smile while suppressing tears, and even folded my hands before those whose minds were empowered by wealth. O hope, O futile hope, what more do you want before you stop making me dance?

yadāḍhyānāṃ agrē draviṇamadaniḥsañjñamanasāṃ

English Meaning: For these lives, fleeting like drops of water upon a lotus leaf, what have we not done after abandoning discrimination? Before the wealthy, intoxicated by riches, we even shamelessly committed the sin of praising our own virtues.

kṣāntaṃ na kṣamayā gṛhōchitasukhaṃ tyaktaṃ na santōṣataḥ
sōḍhō duḥsahaśītatāpapavanaklēśō na taptaṃ tapaḥ ।
dhyātaṃ vittaṃ aharniśaṃ nityamitaprāṇairna śambhōḥ padaṃ
tattatkarma kṛtaṃ yadēva munibhistaistaiḥ phalairvañchitāḥ ॥ 3.6 ॥

English Meaning: We endured hardships not through forgiveness, abandoned home comforts not through contentment, suffered cold, heat and wind without truly practicing austerity, and meditated day and night upon wealth instead of Śambhu’s feet. Thus we performed actions resembling those of sages, but without receiving their fruits.

bhōgā na bhuktā vayaṃ ēva bhuktās
tapō na taptaṃ vayaṃ ēva taptāḥ ।
kālō na yātō vayaṃ ēva yātāstṛṣṇā
na jīrṇā vayaṃ ēva jīrṇāḥ ॥ 3.7 ॥

English Meaning: We did not enjoy pleasures; pleasures consumed us. We did not practice austerity; we ourselves were exhausted. Time did not pass; we passed away. Desire did not grow old; we grew old.

balibhirmukhaṃ ākrāntaṃ palitēnāṅkitaṃ śiraḥ ।
gātrāṇi śithilāyantē tṛṣṇaikā taruṇāyatē ॥ 3.8 ॥

English Meaning: Wrinkles have covered the face, the head is marked with grey hair, and the limbs have become weak; only desire continues to remain young.

vivēkavyākōśē vidadhati samē śāmyati tṛṣā
pariṣvaṅgē tuṅgē prasaratitarāṃ sā pariṇatā ।
jarājīrṇaiśvaryagrasanagahanākṣēpakṛpaṇastṛṣāpātraṃ
yasyāṃ bhavati marutāṃ apyadhipatiḥ ॥ 3.8.1 ॥

English Meaning: Desire subsides when discrimination awakens, but grows stronger in the embrace of powerful sense pleasures. Even when old age consumes prosperity, desire keeps one miserable; even the mighty can become its helpless vessel.

śanairyaṣṭyutthānaṃ ghanatimiraruddhē cha nayanē
ahō mūḍhaḥ kāyastadapi maraṇāpāyachakitaḥ ॥ 3.9 ॥

English Meaning: Desire for pleasures has faded, worldly honor has declined, and friends dear as life have departed. The eyes are darkened and one rises slowly with the help of a staff; yet this foolish body still trembles before the approach of death.

āśā nāma nadī manōrathajalā tṛṣṇātaraṅgākulā

mōhāvartasudustarātigahanā prōttuṅgachintātaṭī
tasyāḥ pāragatā viśuddhamanasō nandanti yōgīśvarāḥ ॥ 3.10 ॥

English Meaning: The river called hope is filled with the waters of desires, agitated by waves of craving, inhabited by crocodiles of attachment, filled with birds of speculation, and destructive of the trees of courage. Its whirlpools of delusion are extremely difficult to cross and its banks are high with anxiety. Yogis of purified minds rejoice after crossing it.

mahadbhiḥ puṇyaughaiśchiraparigṛhītāścha viṣayā
mahāntō jāyantē vyasanaṃ iva dātuṃ viṣayiṇām ॥ 3.11 ॥

English Meaning: I see nothing truly auspicious in worldly conduct. Even the fruits of merit produce fear when carefully considered. Sense pleasures acquired through great stores of merit ultimately become sources of great suffering for those attached to them.

avaśyaṃ yātāraśchirataraṃ uṣitvāpi viṣayā

vrajantaḥ svātantryādatulaparitāpāya manasaḥ
svayaṃ tyaktā hyētē śamasukhaṃ anantaṃ vidadhati ॥ 3.12 ॥

English Meaning: Sense pleasures must eventually depart, however long they are enjoyed. Then what difference is there between being separated from them and voluntarily abandoning them? Those who renounce them themselves gain freedom from the pain of separation and attain limitless peace.

English Meaning: Those whose minds are purified by knowledge of Brahman and discrimination perform the difficult act of abandoning even wealth and pleasures already obtained. Yet we are unable to relinquish even those things that we never possessed, do not possess now, and have no certainty of obtaining—things held only through desire.

asmākaṃ tu manōrathōparachitaprāsādavāpītaṭakrīḍā
kānanakēlikautukajuṣāṃ āyuḥ paraṃ kṣīyatē ॥ 3.14 ॥

English Meaning: Blessed are those who dwell in mountain caves and meditate upon the supreme light; birds fearlessly drink pure water near them, like drops of tears of bliss. Our own lives, however, are wasting away in imagined palaces, gardens, pools, and amusements.

śayyā cha bhūḥ parijanō nijadēhamātram ।
vastraṃ viśīrṇaśatakhaṇḍamayī cha kanthā
hā hā tathāpi viṣayā na parityajanti ॥ 3.15 ॥

English Meaning: A single tasteless meal obtained as alms, the earth as a bed, one’s own body as the only attendant, and a ragged blanket made of a hundred pieces as clothing—alas, even then attachment to sense pleasures does not leave us.

stanau māṃsagranthī kanakakalaśāvityupamitau

sravanmūtraklinnaṃ karivaraśiraspardhi jaghanaṃ
muhurnindyaṃ rūpaṃ kavijanaviśēṣairgurukṛtam ॥ 3.16 ॥

English Meaning: The breasts are merely masses of flesh, yet poets compare them to golden vessels; the mouth is a place of mucus, yet it is compared with the moon. The hips are subject to bodily impurities, yet they are compared to an elephant’s head. Through poetic imagination, this repeatedly criticized body is glorified.

durvārasmarabāṇapannagaviṣavyāviddhamugdhō janaḥ
śēṣaḥ kāmaviḍambitānna viṣayānbhōktuṃ na mōktuṃ kṣamaḥ ॥ 3.17 ॥

English Meaning: Among lovers, only Hara truly excels, bearing half the body of his beloved. Among the detached, who is greater than one free from attachment to women? The rest of humanity, bewildered by the poison of Kāma’s serpent-like arrows, can neither fully enjoy nor renounce worldly pleasures.

vijānantō’pyētē vayaṃ iha vipajjālajaṭilān
na muñchāmaḥ kāmān ahaha gahanō mōhamahimā ॥ 3.18 ॥

English Meaning: The moth falls into the fierce fire without knowing its nature, and the fish swallows bait on the hook through ignorance. Yet we knowingly refuse to abandon pleasures that are filled with dangers. Alas, how profound is the power of delusion!

tṛṣā śuṣyatyāsyē pibati salilaṃ śītamadhuraṃ

pradīptē kāmāgnau sudṛḍhataraṃ āliṅgati vadhūṃ
pratīkāraṃ vyādhēḥ sukhaṃ iti viparyasyati janaḥ ॥ 3.19 ॥

English Meaning: When thirst dries the mouth, one drinks cool sweet water; when hungry, one eats nourishing food. But when the fire of desire burns, a person embraces a woman more tightly and mistakes the supposed remedy for the disease for pleasure itself.

tuṅgaṃ vēśma sutāḥ satāṃ abhimatāḥ saṅkhyātigāḥ sampadaḥ

matvā viśvaṃ anaśvaraṃ niviśatē saṃsārakārāgṛhē
sandṛśya kṣaṇabhaṅguraṃ tadakhilaṃ dhanyastu sannyasyati ॥ 3.20 ॥

English Meaning: Seeing a lofty house, beloved children, countless possessions, a good wife, and fresh youth, the deluded person considers the world permanent and settles into its prison-house. The fortunate person, seeing that everything is fleeting, renounces it all.

kō dēhīti vadētsvadagdhajaṭharasyārthē manasvī pumān ॥ 3.21 ॥

English Meaning: If a household did not contain miserable children pulling at worn garments and crying from hunger, what self-respecting person would, fearing rejection, stammer out “give me” merely to fill his own empty stomach?

abhimatamahāmānagranthiprabhēdapaṭīyasī

vipulavilasallajjāvallīvitānakuṭhārikā
jaṭharapiṭharī duṣpūrēyaṃ karōti viḍambanam ॥ 3.22 ॥

English Meaning: This belly is skilled at cutting through the knot of cherished pride; it destroys the moonlight illuminating the lotus of noble qualities and acts like an axe cutting down the creeper of modesty. Indeed, hunger creates a profound humiliation.

English Meaning: Whether in a virtuous village or in the forest, carrying a skull-bowl covered with white cloth, it is better for a hungry man to go from door to door to fill his belly than to live each day in humiliation before people of his own social circle.

vidyādharādhyuṣitachāruśilātalāni ।
sthānāni kiṃ himavataḥ pralayaṃ gatāni

English Meaning: Where have the Himalayan places disappeared where beautiful rock surfaces were cooled by drops from the waves of the Ganges and inhabited by Vidyādharas, that people now endure humiliation and depend upon the food of others?

kiṃ kandāḥ kandarēbhyaḥ pralayaṃ upagatā nirjharā vā giribhyaḥ

English Meaning: Have the roots disappeared from caves, streams from mountains, and fruits and bark from trees, that people must endure the arrogant faces of wicked men whose brows dance with pride over their small wealth painfully acquired?

English Meaning: Live now on roots and fruits gained through merit, make a bed of fresh leaves, and go to the forest. There one need not even hear the voices of petty, foolish rich men afflicted by the disease of wealth.

English Meaning: Fruits are freely available in every forest, cool sweet water flows from sacred rivers, and soft beds of tender creepers are readily found; yet miserable people continue to endure hardship at the doors of the wealthy.

English Meaning: Sitting upon a stone bed in a mountain cave, may I remember with an inner smile those who suffer by begging before the wealthy and whose minds are confined to petty sense desires.

svātmanyēva samāptahēmamahimā mērurna mē rōchatē ॥ 3.29 ॥

English Meaning: Those who rejoice constantly in contentment never lose their joy, while those whose minds are filled with greed for wealth are never freed from craving. For whom and for what purpose was wealth created? Even Mount Meru, whose golden splendor is complete in itself, does not attract me.

English Meaning: Birth is threatened by death, radiant youth by old age, contentment by greed for wealth, and the joy of peace by sensual distraction. Virtues are attacked by the jealous, forests by wild beasts, and kings by wicked people. What in this world is not threatened or destroyed by something?

English Meaning: Health is destroyed by hundreds of mental and physical diseases; wherever wealth appears, misfortunes enter as though through open doors. Whatever is born is soon made subject to death. What, then, has that relentless destiny created that is truly permanent?

English Meaning: Pleasures are as unstable as high waves, life can end in an instant, the days are few, and the joy of youth remains only briefly. Therefore, the wise should recognize the entire world as insubstantial and devote themselves to spiritual practice with compassion for others.

English Meaning: Pleasures are as fleeting as lightning flashing among clouds; life is as fragile as water resting on lotus petals scattered by the wind; and the play of youth is equally unstable. Understanding this, O wise ones, quickly direct the mind toward yoga, where steadfastness and realization of samādhi can be attained.

English Meaning: Life is restless like a wave, youthful beauty lasts only a few days, wealth is like a mere thought, and pleasures are like lightning during the rainy season. Even the embrace of beloved women does not last long. Therefore, fix the mind upon Brahman and cross the ocean of worldly fear.

English Meaning: Life in the womb is spent in a painful impure confinement; youth is troubled by separation from the beloved; old age is marked by neglect and mockery from beautiful women. O humans, tell me—where is even a little lasting happiness in this world?

English Meaning: Old age stands threatening like a tigress, diseases attack the body like enemies, and life leaks away like water from a broken pot. Yet people continue to act against their own welfare—this is astonishing.

English Meaning: Pleasures are numerous and fleeting, and worldly existence itself becomes a shadow created by them. O people, why wander for their sake? If you trust my words, quiet the hundreds of bonds of hope and establish the mind in its true nature.

English Meaning: O friend, blessed are those who have broken the bonds of worldly existence, conquered the poisonous serpents of sense objects within the mind, and spend their nights in the forest beneath the autumn moon, absorbed in contemplation of accumulated merit.

English Meaning: In that state, Brahmā, Indra and the hosts of gods are regarded as mere blades of grass, and even the sovereignty of the three worlds becomes tasteless. That alone is the supreme, ever-rising bliss. O seeker, do not delight in fleeting pleasures.

English Meaning: That beautiful city, the great king, the circle of feudatories, learned assemblies, moon-faced women, proud princes, and praising bards—all once existed in splendor. Now they remain only in memory. Salutations to Time.

English Meaning: Where once many lived in a house, sometimes only one remains; where there was one, many later arrive, and eventually none remain. Thus Time moves day and night back and forth and plays with living beings upon the stage of the world.

English Meaning: Life diminishes day by day with the rising and setting of the sun, while the burden of countless activities makes time unnoticed. Even after seeing birth, old age, calamity, and death, no fear arises. The world has become intoxicated by the wine of delusion and heedlessness.

English Meaning: The same night and the same day return again and again, yet people foolishly rush about, absorbed in their activities. Repeatedly tormented by the same worldly pursuits, we remain trapped in samsara and, through delusion, feel no shame.

English Meaning: We did not properly meditate upon the Lord’s feet to sever worldly bondage, nor acquire the dharma capable of opening heaven’s gates, nor even embrace women with full breasts and thighs in dreams. Thus, we have merely become an axe that cuts down our mother’s forest of youth.

English Meaning: We did not master learning capable of defeating opponents, nor win fame through heroic deeds with the sword, nor taste the nectar of a beloved’s tender lips beneath the rising moon. Alas, our youth has vanished fruitlessly like a lamp burning in an empty house.

English Meaning: We gained neither flawless learning nor wealth, did not properly serve our parents, and did not even embrace our wide-eyed beloveds in dreams. Our time is being driven away like crows greedy for others’ food.

English Meaning: Those from whom we were born have long since departed, and those with whom we grew up now exist only in memory. We ourselves are approaching decline day by day, like trees upon a sandy riverbank nearing their fall.

English Meaning: Human life is said to be limited to a hundred years, half of which is spent in night. Half of the remainder is consumed by childhood and old age. The rest is spent in disease, separation, sorrow, service, and other burdens. Where is happiness in a life as unstable as a wave of water?

English Meaning: You are a king, while we too are elevated by the knowledge gained through serving great teachers. You are famous for wealth, while poets spread our fame in all directions. Thus the difference between us in wealth and honor is not so great. If you turn away from us, we too remain completely free of desire.

English Meaning: You command wealth, while we command speech; you are a warrior, while we possess inexhaustible skill in silencing the pride of disputants. The wealthy serve you, while intelligent people wish to hear me. Therefore, O King, if you have no interest in me, I have no great dependence upon you either.

English Meaning: Great-hearted rulers of the past created, sustained, gave away, or conquered this world as though it were straw. Other mighty ones rule the fourteen worlds. What madness, then, lies in being proud merely of owning a few cities?

English Meaning: Hundreds of kings could not enjoy the earth for even a moment without losing it. Why then should rulers take pride in possessing a small portion of it? Foolish rulers rejoice even over tiny fragments of territory when they ought to feel concern.

English Meaning: There once was a great being upon whose head the enemy of Kāma, Śiva, placed a white skull as an ornament. Yet today people bow before lesser powers out of concern for preserving their lives. How strange is this fever of immeasurable human pride!

English Meaning: O heart, why do you suffer by constantly trying to please others and win their favor? If you become inwardly content, a whole cluster of wish-fulfilling gems arises within you. What desire could then remain unfulfilled?

English Meaning: O mind, why do you wander pointlessly? Rest somewhere. Whatever is destined to happen will happen exactly so, and not otherwise. I neither dwell upon the past nor imagine the future; I simply experience what comes unanticipated.

English Meaning: O mind, immediately withdraw from the exhausting wilderness of sense objects and take refuge in the path of blessedness capable of ending all suffering. Become established in your own Self, abandon your wave-like restless movement, and do not again delight in this fleeting world. Be peaceful now.

English Meaning: O mind, cleanse yourself of delusion and cultivate love for Śiva, the bearer of the crescent moon. Become attached to the banks of the celestial Ganges. Who can place lasting trust in waves, bubbles, flashes of lightning, wealth, flames, serpents, or rushing river currents?

English Meaning: O mind, do not depend upon Lakṣmī as though she were permanent; she is like a courtesan dancing to the movements of kings’ brows. Let us enter the houses of Vārāṇasī wearing a ragged cloak and receive whatever alms fall into our hands.

English Meaning: If there are melodious poets singing before you, beautiful southern women at your sides, and the jingling bracelets of women waving chowries behind you, then indulge in the pleasures of worldly existence. If not, O mind, enter immediately into thought-free samādhi.

English Meaning: Therefore contemplate the infinite, ageless, supreme Brahman. What use are these empty imaginings? Even sovereignty over the worlds and other pleasures are merely regarded as great by the minds of the spiritually impoverished.

English Meaning: O mind, through your restlessness you descend to the netherworld, cross the sky, and wander through the quarters. Why do you not at least once remember the pure Brahman that is your own Self, through which supreme peace can be attained?

English Meaning: What use are the Vedas, Smṛtis, Purāṇas, vast scriptures, and ritual practices promising heavenly rewards, if one does not attain the state of bliss of the Self that destroys the burden of worldly suffering? Everything else is merely a form of spiritual commerce.

English Meaning: O mind, do not go to the doors where one hears, “This is not the right time; the master is sleeping; wait, he may become angry.” Instead, go to the abode of Viśveśvara, where there are no harsh words from gatekeepers and where limitless peace is bestowed.

English Meaning: The body shrinks, movement weakens, teeth fall out, eyesight fails, deafness increases, and saliva flows from the mouth. Relatives no longer heed one’s words, the wife does not serve, and even one’s son behaves like an enemy. Alas, such is the misery of old age.

English Meaning: What shall we do, O noble ones? Shall we practice austerity beside the celestial river, respectfully serve a virtuous wife, or drink the nectar of scriptures and diverse poetry? Life lasts only a few moments, and we scarcely know what to choose.

English Meaning: In Kāśī there are gardens, varied food, intense austerity, the loincloth as the finest garment, begging as an ornament, and even approaching death appears auspicious. Why would the wise dwell anywhere else after leaving Kāśī?

English Meaning: O Lord, after bathing in the waters of the Ganges and worshipping You with pure flowers and fruits, when shall I sit in meditation upon a stone bed in a mountain cave, living on fruits and devoted to the words of my teacher, and by Your grace become free from the suffering born of serving worldly men?

ēkākī niḥspṛhaḥ śāntaḥ pāṇipātrō digambaraḥ ।
kadā śambhō bhaviṣyāmi karmanirmūlanakṣamaḥ ॥ 3.89 ॥

English Meaning: O Śambhu, when shall I become solitary, desireless, peaceful, using my hand as my bowl and the directions as my garment, capable of uprooting karma completely?

pāṇiṃ pātrayatāṃ nisargaśuchinā bhaikṣēṇa santuṣyatāṃ
yatra kvāpi niṣīdatāṃ bahutṛṇaṃ viśvaṃ muhuḥ paśyatām ।
atyāgē’pi tanōrakhaṇḍaparamānandāvabōdhaspṛśā
madhvā kō’pi śivaprasādasulabhaḥ sampatsyatē yōginām ॥ 3.90 ॥

English Meaning: For yogis who use the hand as a bowl, remain content with naturally pure alms, sit wherever they please, and repeatedly regard the whole world as straw, the honey of uninterrupted supreme bliss becomes attainable through Śiva’s grace even without abandoning the body.

kaupīnaṃ śatakhaṇḍajarjarataraṃ kanthā punastādṛśī

svātantryēṇa niraṅkuśaṃ viharaṇaṃ svāntaṃ praśāntaṃ sadā
sthairyaṃ yōgamahōtsavē’pi cha yadi trailōkyarājyēna kim ॥ 3.91 ॥

English Meaning: A loincloth worn into a hundred pieces, a similar ragged blanket, freedom from anxiety, alms without dependence, food and sleep in the forest or cremation ground, unrestricted wandering, and a perpetually peaceful heart—if steadfastness in the great festival of yoga is attained, what value is sovereignty over the three worlds?

brahmāṇḍaṃ maṇḍalīmātraṃ kiṃ lōbhāya manasvinaḥ ।
śapharīsphuritēnābdhiḥ kṣubdhō na khalu jāyatē ॥ 3.92 ॥

English Meaning: To a person of great mind, the entire universe is merely a small circle. Why should he be greedy for it? The ocean is not disturbed merely by the movement of a tiny fish.

mātarlakṣmi bhajasva kañchidaparaṃ matkāṅkṣiṇī mā sma bhūr

sadyaḥ syūtapalāśapatrapuṭikāpātraiḥ pavitrīkṛtair
bhikṣāvastubhirēva samprati vayaṃ vṛttiṃ samīhāmahē ॥ 3.93 ॥

English Meaning: O Mother Lakṣmī, choose someone else; do not seek me. Those who desire pleasures are under your control, but what place have you among the desireless? We now wish to live solely on alms received in pure bowls made of stitched leaves.

mahāśayyā pṛthvī vipulaṃ upadhānaṃ bhujalatā
vitānaṃ chākāśaṃ vyajanaṃ anukūlō’yaṃ anilaḥ ।
śarachchandrō dīpō virativanitāsaṅgamuditaḥ
sukhī śāntaḥ śētē muniratanubhūtirnṛpa iva ॥ 3.94 ॥

English Meaning: The earth is his great bed, his arms are the pillow, the sky is his canopy, the favorable breeze is his fan, and the autumn moon is his lamp. Delighted by the companionship of the lady called renunciation, the sage sleeps peacefully like a king.

rathyākīrṇaviśīrṇajīrṇavasanaḥ samprāptakanthāsanō
nirmānō nirahaṅkṛtiḥ śamasukhābhōgaikabaddhaspṛhaḥ ॥ 3.95 ॥

English Meaning: A certain ascetic lives on alms, remains apart from crowds, acts independently, follows the path of detachment from taking and giving, wears a blanket made from worn-out garments found on the road, and, free from pride and ego, longs only for the happiness of tranquility.

chaṇḍālaḥ kiṃ ayaṃ dvijātirathavā śūdrō’tha kiṃ tāpasaḥ

ityutpannavikalpajalpamukharairābhāṣyamāṇā janair
na kruddhāḥ pathi naiva tuṣṭamanasō yānti svayaṃ yōginaḥ ॥ 3.96 ॥

English Meaning: People wonder, “Is he an outcaste, a twice-born, a Śūdra, an ascetic, or perhaps a great yogi endowed with discrimination?” Though surrounded by such speculation, the yogis neither become angry nor pleased; they simply continue on their path.

tāṃ anvēṣayatāṃ prayānti satataṃ sarvaṃ samāptiṃ guṇāḥ ॥ 3.97 ॥

English Meaning: The Creator has provided harmless food obtainable without effort, like the air; serpents live upon their natural food, and animals eat grass and sleep upon the earth. Such a simple way of living is suited to those who wish to cross the ocean of worldly existence. Those who seek it gradually bring all virtues to completion.

English Meaning: What greater fortune could I desire while seated in lotus posture upon a Himalayan rock beside the Ganges, absorbed in meditation on Brahman, when even old deer fearlessly rub their bodies against mine to relieve their itching?

jīrṇā kanthā tataḥ kiṃ sitaṃ amalapaṭaṃ paṭṭasūtraṃ tataḥ kiṃ

English Meaning: What does it matter if the blanket is old, the garment pure and white, or there is one wife? What does it matter if one is surrounded by horses and elephants, or eats fine food or coarse food? If the inner light has not awakened and fear of worldly existence has not been destroyed, what is the value of external prosperity?

pāṇiḥ pātraṃ pavitraṃ bhramaṇaparigataṃ bhaikṣyaṃ akṣayyaṃ annaṃ

English Meaning: Blessed are those for whom the hand is the pure bowl, alms obtained while wandering are inexhaustible food, the ten directions are their spacious garment, and the earth their ample bed. Content through complete detachment, they abandon humiliation and uproot karma.

trailōkyādhipatitvaṃ ēva virasaṃ yasminmahāśāsanē

bhōgaḥ kō’pi sa ēka ēva paramō nityōditō jṛmbhatē
yatsvādādvirasā bhavanti viṣayāstrailōkyarājyādayaḥ ॥ 3.99.1 ॥

English Meaning: Do not become attached to seats, garments, honors, and pleasures after attaining that supreme state in which even sovereignty over the three worlds becomes tasteless. There is one supreme, ever-rising bliss whose taste makes even the pleasures of the three worlds seem insipid.

English Meaning: O Mother Earth, O Father Air, O Friend Fire, O Noble Water, and O Brother Space, this is my final salutation to you all. Through the merit born of association with you and the pure knowledge that arises from it, may I dispel all delusion and merge into the Supreme Brahman.

English Meaning: I regard as supreme those whose bed is a mountain rock, whose home is a mountain cave, whose clothing is tree bark, whose friends are deer, and whose sustenance is the tender fruits of trees; for whom spring water is drink and the woman called knowledge is their delight. Their heads are not bound to the gesture of servile submission.

English Meaning: His father is courage, his mother forgiveness, his wife peace, his friend truth, his sister compassion, and his brother self-control. The earth is his bed, the directions his clothing, and the nectar of knowledge his food. O friend, what can such a yogi possibly fear?

English Meaning: Whether it is a serpent or a necklace, a powerful enemy or a friend, a jewel or a lump of clay, a bed of flowers or a stone, a blade of grass or a woman—the days of one who sees all equally pass in the same manner. Somewhere in a sacred forest, I spend them murmuring, “Śiva, Śiva, Śiva.”
