Grow in Love…The Message of Guru Poornima

he festival of Guru Poornima is one of the most significant celebrations in the Sai calendar. Over the years, Bhagavan has used this occasion for the unfurling of many landmark events of His mission, be it the opening ceremony of the first college campus of Sri Sathya Sai University in 1971, or the inauguration of the Sri Sathya Sai Water Supply Project, Stage-I in 1995, or the announcement for the establishment of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Whitefield, in 1999, or the revelation that He is in fact the Shiva-Shakthi Avatar on earth in 1963. And on every one of these momentous days He blessed the devotees with a profound discourse.

Guru Poornima is dedicated for offering gratitude to the guru.On this day, the Moon, which is the presiding deity of the mind, is full, clear, cool and bright! It has no blemish or dullness which diminishes its glow. The guru too is pictured and praised on this occasion as unblemished, bright and affectionate. He is full of devotion with a sense of surrender to God. He is tolerant and truly peaceful. He is the living example and embodiment of the virtues he desires his disciples to develop.

The guru that initiates one into chanting a particular mantra is a Dheeksha Guru, while the guru who transforms and elevates the personality of his pupils is a Siksha Guru. It is this latter guru that is reverentially praised in thousands of ways in the holy texts. He removes the faults in vision and destroys the darkness of ignorance. He reveals the Atma to the individual and makes him free.

Sage Vyasa was born with a great urge for spiritual upliftment and he entered into deep study and sadhana (spiritual practice)even as a child. He acquired such divine wisdom and glory that he is identified with Narayana (God) Himself.

He stands out as the Lokaguru (World Teacher) for he codified the Vedic hymns and prepared the great Vedantictext ‘Brahmasutras’, besides the epic commentaries of the Veda-vedanta (teachings based on Upanisadicphilosophies), Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavatham.

He is called ‘Veda Vyasa’ because of his service to the students of the Vedas which defied understanding since they were countless and fathomless. It is for this reason it is said Anantho vai Vedah – The Vedas are limitless.

Vyasa helped mankind to earn peace. Therefore, Vyasa refers to the person who has elaborated and expanded the knowledge of truth, that is to say, the universal eternal energy.

The Message of Guru Poornima – divine wisdom for positive guidance

The Message of Guru Poornima is a sacred reminder that every seeker needs true guidance to move from darkness to light. Guru Poornima is not only a festival of offering flowers, prayers, and gratitude to the guru. Its deeper meaning is to recognize the divine wisdom that removes ignorance, purifies the heart, and leads human life toward truth, love, peace, and self-realization.

The word guru itself carries a beautiful meaning. “Gu” represents darkness, and “ru” represents the remover of darkness. A true guru removes the darkness of confusion, ego, fear, and attachment. The guru does not merely give information; the guru awakens transformation. In the presence of true guidance, the seeker begins to understand the purpose of life and the value of righteous living.

The Message of Guru Poornima teaches that spiritual progress is not possible through pride. A proud mind feels that it already knows everything, but a humble heart remains open to learning. The guru’s grace flows most naturally into a heart filled with faith, sincerity, and surrender. Humility is the doorway through which wisdom enters.

In ordinary life, people search for success, comfort, recognition, and pleasure. These may bring temporary satisfaction, but they cannot remove inner emptiness. The guru shows that the real goal of life is not outer achievement alone, but inner awakening. When thoughts become pure, words become kind, and actions become selfless, life becomes truly meaningful.

The Message of Guru Poornima also reminds us that the guru is not limited to a physical form alone. The guru principle is eternal. It can guide us through a living master, sacred teachings, the voice of conscience, prayer, silence, nature, and even life’s difficult experiences. Pain teaches patience, failure teaches humility, and service teaches compassion. For a sincere seeker, every experience can become a lesson from the Divine.

Guru Poornima is a day of gratitude. We remember those who have guided us, corrected us, blessed us, and helped us grow. A guru may sometimes speak gently and sometimes firmly, but true guidance always comes from compassion. Just as a doctor gives medicine to cure illness, the guru gives discipline and wisdom to cure ignorance, ego, and weakness.

The Message of Guru Poornima becomes complete only when gratitude turns into practice. It is not enough to praise the guru with words while continuing the same old habits of anger, jealousy, selfishness, and pride. The best offering to the guru is a transformed life. When we follow truth, serve others, control the senses, and remember God, our devotion becomes real.

A disciple must understand that the guru shows the path, but the seeker must walk on it. No one can become pure through admiration alone. Regular effort is needed. Prayer, meditation, selfless service, good company, spiritual study, and honest self-examination help the seeker move forward. The guru’s blessing becomes powerful when the disciple makes sincere effort.

The Message of Guru Poornima also teaches the importance of surrender. Surrender does not mean weakness or blind belief. It means trusting divine wisdom more than the restless ego. The ego wants control, praise, and comfort. Surrender brings peace, clarity, and inner strength. When the seeker follows the guru’s guidance with faith, the mind slowly becomes calm and steady.

The full moon of Guru Poornima carries a beautiful symbol. The moon shines by reflecting the light of the sun. In the same way, the true disciple shines by reflecting the wisdom of the guru. The disciple’s life should become bright with love, humility, purity, and service. When the heart reflects divine guidance, it becomes a blessing to others.

In today’s world, people have much information but little peace. Many know how to earn, compete, and speak, but few know how to live with inner balance. The guru’s message is therefore more important than ever. It reminds us to slow down, look within, control negative thoughts, and live with compassion. Without inner guidance, outer progress can still leave the heart empty.

The Message of Guru Poornima inspires us to respect all sources of noble wisdom. Parents, teachers, saints, scriptures, and sincere spiritual companions can all help shape our life. Anyone who leads us toward truth, kindness, discipline, and God becomes a channel of grace. We should receive such guidance with gratitude and apply it sincerely.

The guru’s real aim is to awaken the divine presence within us. The guru does not want the disciple to remain weak, dependent, or confused. True guidance makes the seeker courageous, loving, responsible, and spiritually aware. It helps us realize that we are not merely the body, name, position, or personality. We are divine souls carrying peace and love within.

The Message of Guru Poornima finally teaches that the highest worship of the guru is to live the teaching. If the guru teaches love, we must become loving. If the guru teaches truth, we must become truthful. If the guru teaches service, we must serve with humility. If the guru teaches devotion, we must remember God with a pure heart.

When Guru Poornima is celebrated in this way, it becomes more than a festival. It becomes an inner awakening. The heart becomes grateful, the mind becomes disciplined, and life becomes guided by divine wisdom. Through sincere devotion to the guru principle, every seeker can move from ignorance to knowledge, from restlessness to peace, and from ordinary living to sacred fulfillment.
