Action and Actor

Sivananda Yoga, Talk ONE, Action and Actor

by Swami Sivananda

“Action performed as duty, without attachment, without love or hate, without desire for fruit, is called pure (Sattvic). But that action that is done by one longing for pleasures, or again with egoism, or with much effort, is declared to be passionate (Rajasic). The action performed under delusion without regard to the capacity and consequences, loss and injury to others, is declared to be dark (Tamasic).” Gita: Ch. XVIII-23, 24, 25.

“Free from attachment, not egoistic, endued with firmness and enthusiasm, unaffected in success and failure, that actor is called pure (Sattvic). Passionate and desiring to attain the fruit of actions, greedy cruel, impure, moved by joy and sorrow, such an actor is said to be passionate (Rajasic). Fickle, cheating, vulgar, stubborn, malicious, indolent, despondent and procrastinating, such an actor is said to be dark (Tamasic).” Gita: Ch. XVIII-26 to 28.

Action and Actor – Duty, Ego, and Spiritual Understanding

Action and Actor is a deep spiritual subject because every person lives through actions and also carries the feeling, “I am doing.” Work, speech, thought, service, duty, worship, study, and even silence are connected with action in some way. But the real question is not only what is done. The deeper question is who feels ownership over the action and what attitude stands behind it.

In ordinary life, a person strongly identifies with the body and mind. They say, “I worked,” “I achieved,” “I failed,” “I helped,” “I suffered,” or “I succeeded.” This sense of doership becomes the root of pride, anxiety, attachment, and sorrow. When the ego claims every action as its own, the mind becomes bound by results and reactions.

Action and Actor teaches that action itself is not the main bondage. Bondage comes when the ego says, “I am the only doer, I am the owner, and the result belongs to me.” The same action can bind one person and purify another. Work done with selfishness creates attachment. Work done as duty, service, and offering purifies the heart.

The body acts through the organs, the mind thinks, the intellect decides, and nature provides strength, opportunity, and circumstance. A wise seeker reflects deeply and sees that no action is completely independent. Many visible and invisible factors support every deed. This understanding reduces pride and opens the heart to humility.

A person may work hard and still fail. Another may receive success with less effort. This does not mean effort is useless. It means that results are shaped by many causes beyond personal control. Therefore, the seeker should focus on right effort, pure motive, and calm acceptance, instead of becoming obsessed with outcomes.

Action and Actor becomes clear through Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga does not ask the seeker to stop working. It asks the seeker to work without egoistic attachment. Perform duty sincerely, serve others with love, and offer the fruit of action to the Divine. This attitude changes ordinary work into spiritual practice.

The actor in ignorance feels separate, proud, and anxious. Such a person constantly worries about praise, blame, success, failure, gain, and loss. The actor in wisdom becomes humble and balanced. They understand that they are an instrument of a higher power. They act carefully, but they do not carry the burden of ego.

This does not mean becoming careless or passive. Spiritual understanding should make action more pure, not weak. A seeker should work with full attention, honesty, discipline, and compassion. Detachment from results is not laziness. It is freedom from feverish anxiety after doing one’s best.

Action and Actor also shows the importance of motive. Two people may perform the same outer deed, but one may act for praise while another acts out of love. One may give charity for name, another may give silently. One may serve to control others, another may serve to reduce ego. The inner motive decides the spiritual quality of action.

Self-examination is necessary. Before acting, ask: Is this action guided by truth? Is it helpful? Is it selfish or selfless? Am I acting from anger, pride, fear, desire, or duty? After acting, ask: Am I attached to appreciation? Am I disturbed by criticism? Such questions purify the actor and refine the action.

The sense of doership becomes weaker through devotion. Prayer, surrender, mantra, and remembrance of God teach the heart that all power comes from the Divine. The seeker begins to offer every action before starting and every result after completion. This simple practice slowly removes pride and anxiety.

Action and Actor can also be understood through the witness-attitude. Thoughts arise, decisions are made, the body moves, words are spoken, and duties are performed, but awareness remains the silent witness. The seeker learns to act in the world while inwardly remaining rooted in this witnessing consciousness. This brings freedom in the midst of activity.

When ego reduces, action becomes lighter. The seeker no longer feels the need to prove superiority in every situation. Praise is accepted with humility, and blame is accepted with patience. Success is offered with gratitude, and failure is accepted as a lesson. Such balance is a sign of inner maturity.

Selfless service is a powerful way to purify the actor. When work is done for the welfare of others, the narrow circle of “I” and “mine” begins to expand. Service teaches humility, compassion, patience, and cooperation. It helps the seeker understand that life is not only for personal comfort but also for offering and upliftment.

In the end, Action and Actor teaches that true freedom comes when action is performed without egoistic doership and selfish attachment. Through duty, pure motive, self-examination, devotion, surrender, service, and witness-consciousness, the seeker transforms work into worship. Then action no longer binds; it purifies the heart and leads the soul toward peace, wisdom, and liberation.
