vyālanilayamilanēna garalamiva kalayati malayasamīram ॥
sā virahē tava dīnā mādhava manasijaviśikhabhayādiva bhāvanayā tvayi līnā ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning: O Mādhava! In separation from you, she has become utterly distressed. She condemns sandalwood, finds even the moonbeams painful, and regards the gentle Malaya breeze as though it were poison. As if terrified by Cupid’s arrows, her mind remains completely absorbed in thoughts of you.

aviralanipatitamadanaśarādiva bhavadavanāya viśālam ।
svahṛdayarmaṇī varma karōti sajalanalinīdalajālam ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning: As though to protect herself from the incessantly falling arrows of Cupid, she places a broad covering of lotus leaves moistened with tears upon her heart, as if making them her armor.

kusumaviśikhaśaratalpamanalpavilāsakalākamanīyam ।
vratamiva tava parirambhasukhāya karōti kusumaśayanīyam ॥ 3 ॥

English Meaning: She prepares a bed of flowers resembling the flower-arrows of Cupid. Desiring the bliss of your embrace, she accepts this floral couch almost as a sacred vow dedicated to union with you.

English Meaning: Streams of tears flow over her beautiful lotus-like face. It appears like the moon, afflicted by the terrible jaws of Rāhu, from which a stream of nectar is flowing.

vilikhati rahasi kuraṅgamadēna bhavantamasamaśarabhūtam ।
praṇamati makaramadhō vinidhāya karē cha śaraṃ navachūtam ॥ 5 ॥

English Meaning: In solitude, she draws your image with musk from the deer, regarding you as though you were Cupid himself. Then, holding a fresh mango-blossom arrow in her hand, she bows to the makara-bannered god of love.

tvayi vimukhē mayi sapadi sudhānidhirapi tanutē tanudāham ॥ 6 ॥

English Meaning: At every moment she repeats, “O Mādhava, I have fallen at your feet.” When you turn away from her, even the moon, the very reservoir of nectar, causes an intense burning sensation in her body.

dhyānalayēna puraḥ parikalpya bhavantamatīva durāpam ।
vilapati hasati viṣīdati rōditi chañchati muñchati tāpam ॥ 7 ॥

English Meaning: Imagining you before her through deep meditation, though you seem exceedingly difficult to attain, she alternately laments, laughs, becomes sorrowful, weeps, trembles restlessly, and struggles to relieve the burning pain of separation.

English Meaning: This deeply moving composition of Śrī Jayadeva should be cherished and contemplated in the heart. It records the words of the friend of a young cowherd woman who is tormented by separation from Hari, and is worthy of being recited with devotion.

āvāsō vipināyatē priyasakhīmālāpi jālāyatē tāpō’pi śvasitēna dāvadahanajvālākalāpāyatē ।
sāpi tvadvirahēṇa hanta hariṇīrūpāyatē hā kathaṃ kandarpō’pi yamāyatē virachayañśārdūlavikrīḍitam ॥ 26 ॥

English Meaning: Her dwelling seems to her like a vast forest, and even the company of her dear friends feels like a net. The heat of separation grows with every breath like the flames of a forest fire. Alas, separated from you, she has become like a frightened doe, while Cupid himself has become like Death, cruelly tormenting her.

sā manutē kṛśatanuratibhāram ॥
rādhikā virahē tava kēśava ॥ 1 ॥

paśyati viṣamiva vapuṣi saśaṅkam ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning: Even the smooth and soothing sandalwood paste from Malaya, which should bring comfort, she regards suspiciously as though it were poison upon her body.

śvasitapavanamanupamapariṇāham ।
madanadahanamiva vahati sadāham ॥ 3 ॥

English Meaning: The long, deep breaths escaping from her have become like the fire of Cupid, continually burning her with the pain of longing.

diśi diśi kirati sajalakaṇajālam ।
nayananalinamiva vigalitanālam ॥ 4 ॥

English Meaning: Streams of tears scatter from her eyes in every direction, like drops of water falling from a lotus whose stem has been severed.

nayanaviṣayamapi kisalayatalpam ।
kalayati vihitahutāśavikalpam ॥ 5 ॥

English Meaning: Even a soft bed of tender leaves, which should delight the eyes, appears to her like a blazing fire.

tyajati na pāṇitalēna kapōlam ।
bālaśaśinamiva sāyamalōlam ॥ 6 ॥

English Meaning: She does not remove her hand from her cheek. Her tender cheek resembles the young moon of evening, and she continually supports and touches it with her palm.

haririti haririti japati sakāmam ।
virahavihitamaraṇēna nikāmam ॥ 7 ॥

English Meaning: With intense longing and desire, she repeatedly chants, “Hari! Hari!” and becomes utterly overwhelmed by the death-like suffering caused by separation.

śrījayadēvabhaṇitamiti gītam ।
sukhayatu kēśavapadamupunītam ॥ 8 ॥

English Meaning: May this song, composed by Śrī Jayadeva, bring happiness to those who take refuge at the sacred feet of Lord Keśava.

sā rōmāñchati sītkarōti vilapatyutkmpatē tāmyati dhyāyatyudbhramati pramīlati patatyudyāti mūrchChatyapi ।
ētāvatyatanujvarē varatanurjīvēnna kiṃ tē rasāt svarvaidyapratima prasīdasi yadi tyaktō’nyathā nāntakaḥ ॥ 27 ॥

English Meaning: She shudders with horripilation, sighs, laments, trembles, languishes, meditates upon you, wanders restlessly, closes her eyes, falls down, rises again, and even faints. O Mādhava, who are like a divine physician! If you do not mercifully cure her with the nectar of your touch, how can this delicate woman survive such a terrible fever of love? Otherwise, death itself awaits her.

smarāturāṃ daivatavaidyahṛdya tvadaṅgasaṅgāmṛtamātrasādhyām ।
vimuktabādhāṃ kuruṣē na rādhā-mupēndra vajrādapi dāruṇō’si ॥ 28 ॥

English Meaning: O Upendra! Rādhā is tormented by the pain of love, and she can be healed only by the nectar of contact with your body. If you still do not free her from this suffering, then you are more cruel than the thunderbolt itself.

kandarpajvarasañjvarasturatanōrāścharyamasyāśchiraṃ chētaśchandanachandramaḥkamalinīchintāsu santāmyati ।
kintu klāntivaśēna śītalatanuṃ tvāmēkamēva priyaṃ dhyāyantī rahasi sthitā kathamapi kṣīṇā kṣaṇaṃ prāṇiti ॥ 29 ॥

English Meaning: Afflicted by the fever of Cupid, her body and mind have long been burning despite thinking of cooling things such as sandalwood, moonlight, and lotus ponds. Yet, strangely, exhausted as she is, she somehow keeps herself alive for a moment by meditating in solitude only upon your cool and beloved form.

kṣaṇamapi virahaḥ purā na sēhē nayananimīlanakhinnayā yayā tē ।
śvasiti kathamasau rasālaśākhāṃ chiravirahēṇa vilōkya puṣpitāgrām ॥ 30 ॥

English Meaning: She who once could not endure even a moment of separation from you, and who became distressed merely by closing her eyes, how can she now continue to breathe after seeing an ashoka-like flowering mango branch while enduring such prolonged separation?

॥ iti gītagōvindē snigdhamādhavō nāma chaturthaḥ sargaḥ ॥

English Meaning: Thus concludes the fourth canto of Śrī Gītagōvinda, entitled “Snigdha-Mādhava.”
