English Meaning: Even Kṛṣṇa, the enemy of Kaṃsa, placing Rādhā within His heart, cast away the chains of worldly attachment and left the other beautiful women of Vraja.

itastatastāmanusṛtya rādhikā-manaṅgabāṇavraṇakhinnamānasaḥ ।
kṛtānutāpaḥ sa kalindanandinī-taṭāntakuñjē viṣasāda mādhavaḥ ॥ 19 ॥

English Meaning: Following Rādhikā here and there, Mādhava, whose heart was tormented by the wounds of Cupid’s arrows, repented his actions and sorrowfully withdrew into a secluded grove on the bank of the Yamunā.

॥ gītaṃ 7 ॥

māmiyaṃ chalitā vilōkya vṛtaṃ vadhūnichayēna ।
sāparādhatayā mayāpi na vāritātibhayēna ॥
hari hari hatādaratayā gatā sā kupitēva ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning: Seeing me surrounded by a multitude of women, Rādhā left. Because of my guilt and overwhelming fear, I could not stop her. Alas, Hari! Feeling neglected by me, she departed as though she were angry.

kiṃ kariṣyati kiṃ vadiṣyati sā chiraṃ virahēṇa ।
kiṃ dhanēna janēna kiṃ mama jīvanēna gṛhēṇa ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning: What will she do in this prolonged separation? What will she say? What use are wealth, people, life, or even my home to me without her?

chintayāmi tadānanaṃ kuṭilabhru kōpabharēṇa ।
śōṇapadmamivōpari bhramatākulaṃ bhramarēṇa ॥ 3 ॥

English Meaning: I meditate upon her face, with its curved brows filled with anger, resembling a red lotus over which a restless bee circles in agitation.

tāmahaṃ hṛdi saṅgatāmaniśaṃ bhṛśaṃ ramayāmi ।
kiṃ vanē’nusarāmi tāmiha kiṃ vṛthā vilapāmi ॥ 4 ॥

English Meaning: She dwells constantly within my heart, and I find my deepest delight in her. Should I therefore follow her into the forest, or should I remain here lamenting in vain?

tanvi khinnamasūyayā hṛdayaṃ tavākalayāmi ।
tanna vēdmi kutō gatāsi na tēna tē’nunayāmi ॥ 5 ॥

English Meaning: O slender and delicate one! I understand that your heart is distressed by jealousy and sorrow. Yet I do not know where you have gone, and therefore I cannot go and plead with you to return.

dṛśyatē puratō gatāgatamēva mē vidadhāsi ।
kiṃ purēva sasambhramaṃ parirambhaṇaṃ na dadāsi ॥ 6 ॥

English Meaning: It seems as though you appear and disappear before me, giving me only fleeting glimpses. Why do you not embrace me with the same loving eagerness as before?

kṣamyatāmaparaṃ kadāpi tavēdṛśaṃ na karōmi ।
dēhi sundari darśanaṃ mama manmathēna dunōmi ॥ 7 ॥

English Meaning: O beautiful one! Forgive this offense of mine. I shall never behave in such a way again. Grant me your sight, for the arrows of Cupid are causing me intense suffering.

varṇitaṃ jayadēvakēna harēridaṃ pravaṇēna ।
kindubilvasamudrasambhavarōhiṇīramaṇēna ॥ 8 ॥

English Meaning: This lament of Lord Hari, the beloved of Lakṣmī, who arose from the ocean, has been lovingly described by the devoted poet Jayadeva, born in Kindubilva.

hṛdi bisalatāhārō nāyaṃ bhujaṅgamanāyakaḥ kuvalayadalaśrēṇī kaṇṭhē na sā garaladyutiḥ ।
malayajarajō nēdaṃ bhasma priyārahitē mayi prahara na harabhrāntyānaṅga krudhā kimu dhāvasi ॥ 20 ॥

English Meaning: The garland of lotus fibers upon my heart is not the king of serpents. The row of blue-lotus petals around my neck is not the radiance of poison. The sandalwood dust from Malaya upon my body is not sacred ash. O Cupid, I am already separated from my beloved; why do you mistake me for Śiva and attack me in anger?

pāṇau mā kuru chūtasāyakamamuṃ mā chāpamārōpaya krīḍānirjitaviśva mūrChitajanāghātēna kiṃ pauruṣam ।
tasyā ēva mṛgīdṛśō manasijaprēṅkhatkaṭākṣāśuga-śrēṇījarjaritaṃ manāgapi manō nādyāpi sandhukṣatē ॥ 21 ॥

English Meaning: O Cupid! Do not place this mango-blossom arrow in your hand, nor set it upon your bow. What valor is there in conquering the world through play and striking those who are already helpless? My mind has already been grievously wounded by the darting sidelong glances of that doe-eyed woman; there is scarcely any part of it left for your arrows to afflict.

bhrūchāpē nihitaḥ kaṭākṣaviśikhō nirmātu marmavyathāṃ śyāmātmā kuṭilaḥ karōtu kabarībhārō’pi mārōdyamam ।
mōhaṃ tāvadayaṃ cha tanvi tanutāṃ bimbādarō rāgavān sadvṛttastanamaṇdalastava kathaṃ prāṇairmama krīḍati ॥ 22 ॥

English Meaning: O slender one! Let the arrow of your sidelong glance, placed upon the bow of your brows, pierce the vulnerable places of my heart. Let your dark, curling locks perform the work of Cupid. Let your love-filled bimba-red lips enchant me, and let your beautifully rounded breasts play with my very life. How could I possibly escape such enchantment?

tāni sparśasukhāni tē cha taralāḥ snigdhā dṛśōrvibhramā-stadvaktrāmbujasaurabhaṃ sa cha sudhāsyandī girāṃ vakrimā ।
sā bimbādharamādhurīti viṣayāsaṅgē’pi chēnmānasaṃ tasyāṃ lagnasamādhi hanta virahavyādhiḥ kathaṃ vardhatē ॥ 23 ॥

English Meaning: Those pleasures of your touch, the tender and restless movements of your eyes, the fragrance of your lotus-like face, and the graceful sweetness of your nectar-flowing speech, together with the sweetness of your bimba-red lips—though my mind remains absorbed in these delights, alas, why does the disease of separation from you continue to grow?

bhrūpallavaṃ dhanurapāṅgataraṅgitāni bāṇāḥ guṇaḥ śravaṇapāliriti smarēṇa ।
tasyāmanaṅgajayajaṅgamadēvatāyāṃ astrāṇi nirjitajaganti kimarpitāni ॥ 24 ॥

English Meaning: Her tender brows are the bow, her wave-like sidelong glances are the arrows, and the graceful line extending toward her ears is the bowstring. Why has Cupid bestowed such world-conquering weapons upon that woman, who seems like a living goddess of love?

[ēṣaḥ ślōkaḥ kēṣuchana saṃskaraṇēṣu vidyatē]

English Meaning: This verse is found in some editions.

tiryakkaṇṭha vilōla mauli taralōttaṃ sasya vaṃśōchcharad-
dīptisthāna kṛtāvadhāna lalanā lakṣairna saṃlakṣitāḥ ।
sammugdhē madhusūdanasya madhurē rādhāmukhēndau sudhā-
sārē kandalitāśchiraṃ dadhatu vaḥ kṣēmaṃ kaṭākṣōrmmaya ॥ (25) ॥

English Meaning: May the waves of Madhusūdana’s sidelong glances, blossoming like streams of nectar upon the enchanting and sweet moon-like face of Rādhā, bestow lasting well-being upon you. His playful, oblique gaze, while the ornaments upon His head gently sway and the radiant sound of His flute draws the attention of countless maidens, remains absorbed in the beauty of Rādhā.

॥ iti śrīgītagōvindē mugdhamadhusūdanō nāma tṛtīyaḥ sargaḥ ॥

English Meaning: Thus concludes the third canto of Śrī Gītagōvinda, entitled “Mugdha-Madhusūdana.”
