Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 15

yasya chittaṃ dravībhūtaṃ kṛpayā sarvajantuṣu ।
tasya jñānēna mōkṣēṇa kiṃ jaṭābhasmalēpanaiḥ ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
For one whose heart has melted with compassion toward all living beings, what need is there for external practices such as matted hair or smearing ashes? For such a person, knowledge and liberation are what truly matter.

ēkamapyakṣaraṃ yastu guruḥ śiṣyaṃ prabōdhayēt ।
pṛthivyāṃ nāsti taddravyaṃ yaddattvā sō’nṛṇī bhavēt ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
A teacher who awakens a disciple by imparting even a single letter of knowledge creates a debt that cannot be repaid by giving anything in the entire world.

khalānāṃ kaṇṭakānāṃ cha dvividhaiva pratikriyā ।
upānanmukhabhaṅgō vā dūratō vā visarjanam ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
There are two ways to deal with wicked people and thorns: crush them under one’s footwear or avoid them by keeping oneself far away.

kuchailinaṃ dantamalōpadhāriṇaṃ
bahvāśinaṃ niṣṭhurabhāṣiṇaṃ cha ।
sūryōdayē chāstamitē śayānaṃ
vimuñchati śrīryadi chakrapāṇiḥ ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
One who wears dirty clothes, neglects dental cleanliness, eats excessively, speaks harshly, and sleeps at sunrise and sunset loses the favor of prosperity; even if Lord Vishnu’s grace is present, Goddess Lakshmi does not remain with such a person.

tyajanti mitrāṇi dhanairvihīnaṃ
putrāścha dārāścha suhṛjjanāścha ।
tamarthavantaṃ punarāśrayanti
arthō hi lōkē manuṣyasya bandhuḥ ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
Friends, children, wife, and relatives may abandon a person who has lost his wealth. When that person becomes prosperous again, they return to him. In the worldly sense, wealth is regarded as a person’s companion.

anyāyōpārjitaṃ dravyaṃ daśa varṣāṇi tiṣṭhati ।
prāptē chaikādaśē varṣē samūlaṃ tadvinaśyati ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
Wealth acquired through unjust means may remain for ten years, but in the eleventh year it is destroyed completely, together with its very foundation.

ayuktaṃ svāminō yuktaṃ yuktaṃ nīchasya dūṣaṇam ।
amṛtaṃ rāhavē mṛtyurviṣaṃ śaṅkarabhūṣaṇam ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
What is improper for a master may sometimes be fitting for a base person. Nectar became death for Rahu, while poison became an ornament for Lord Shankara. Thus, the effect and value of a thing depend upon the person and circumstances.

tadbhōjanaṃ yaddvijabhuktaśēṣaṃ
tatsauhṛdaṃ yatkriyatē parasmin ।
sā prājñatā yā na karōti pāpaṃ
dambhaṃ vinā yaḥ kriyatē sa dharmaḥ ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
Food that remains after feeding a worthy Brahmana or guest is considered blessed, and true friendship is that which is shown toward another. True wisdom is that which prevents one from committing sin, and an act performed without hypocrisy is true righteousness.

maṇirluṇṭhati pādāgrē kāchaḥ śirasi dhāryatē ।
krayavikrayavēlāyāṃ kāchaḥ kāchō maṇirmaṇiḥ ॥ 09 ॥

English Meaning:
A precious gem may lie beneath the feet while glass may be worn upon the head. At the time of buying and selling, glass remains glass and a gem remains a gem. The verse teaches that true worth is recognized by proper discernment.

anantaśāstraṃ bahulāścha vidyāḥ
svalpaścha kālō bahuvighnatā cha ।
yatsārabhūtaṃ tadupāsanīyāṃ
haṃsō yathā kṣīramivāmbumadhyāt ॥ 10 ॥

English Meaning:
The scriptures are endless, knowledge is vast, time is limited, and obstacles are many. Therefore, one should seek and absorb what is essential, just as the swan is traditionally said to separate milk from water.

dūrāgataṃ pathi śrāntaṃ vṛthā cha gṛhamāgatam ।
anarchayitvā yō bhuṅktē sa vai chāṇḍāla uchyatē ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
One who eats without honoring a guest who has arrived home tired after traveling a long distance is regarded as behaving like a chandala.

paṭhanti chaturō vēdāndharmaśāstrāṇyanēkaśaḥ ।
ātmānaṃ naiva jānanti darvī pākarasaṃ yathā ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
Those who study the four Vedas and many sacred scriptures but do not know their own true Self are like a ladle that touches the food but never tastes its flavor.

dhanyā dvijamayī naukā viparītā bhavārṇavē ।
tarantyadhōgatāḥ sarvē upariṣṭhāḥ patantyadhaḥ ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
In the ocean of worldly existence, the boat symbolically made of Brahmanas is considered blessed. Those who are below are carried across, while those above fall downward. The verse uses a traditional metaphor to emphasize the importance of spiritual guidance and knowledge.

ayamamṛtanidhānaṃ nāyakō’pyōṣadhīnām
amṛtamayaśarīraḥ kāntiyuktō’pi chandraḥ ।
bhavativigataraśmirmaṇḍalaṃ prāpya bhānōḥ
parasadananiviṣṭaḥ kō laghutvaṃ na yāti ॥ 14 ॥

English Meaning:
The moon is regarded as a reservoir of nectar, lord of medicinal herbs, and possessed of a radiant, nectar-like body. Yet before the sphere of the sun, its rays become diminished. Likewise, even a great person may lose prominence when placed within another’s greater sphere of influence.

alirayaṃ nalinīdalamadhyagaḥ
kamalinīmakarandamadālasaḥ ।
vidhivaśātparadēśamupāgataḥ
kuṭajapuṣparasaṃ bahu manyatē ॥ 15 ॥

English Meaning:
This bee once lived among lotus leaves and delighted in the fragrant nectar of the lotus. But when, by the force of fate, it reached another land, it came to regard even the juice of the kutaja flower as highly valuable. Circumstances can change one’s preferences and perceptions.

pītaḥ kruddhēna tātaścharaṇatalahatō vallabhō yēna rōṣā
dābālyādvipravaryaiḥ svavadanavivarē dhāryatē vairiṇī mē ।
gēhaṃ mē Chēdayanti pratidivasamumākāntapūjānimittaṃ
tasmātkhinnā sadāhaṃ dvijakulanilayaṃ nātha yuktaṃ tyajāmi ॥ 16 ॥

English Meaning:
O Lord! In anger, my father drank me; in anger, my beloved struck me with his foot; in childhood, excellent Brahmanas held me within their mouths, and my enemies keep me within their mouths. Every day my home is cut for the worship of Uma’s Lord. Therefore, being constantly distressed, O Lord, I consider it proper to leave the dwelling of the Brahmanas. This verse is presented as a symbolic or traditional mythological expression.

bandhanāni khalu santi bahūni
prēmarajjukṛtabandhanamanyat ।
dārubhēdanipuṇō’pi ṣaḍaṅghri-
rniṣkriyō bhavati paṅkajakōśēḥ ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
There are indeed many kinds of bonds, but the bond created by the cord of love is different. Even a bee skilled at boring through wood becomes helpless when enclosed within the petals of a lotus. The bond of love can be extraordinarily powerful.

Chinnō’pi chandana tarurna jahāti gandhaṃ
vṛddhō’pi vāraṇapati-rnajahāti līlām ।
hantrārpitō madhuratāṃ na jahāti chēkṣuḥ
kṣīṇō’pi na tyajati śilaguṇān kulīnaḥ ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning:
Even when cut down, the sandalwood tree does not abandon its fragrance. Even when old, the lord of elephants does not abandon his natural playfulness. Even when placed in the hands of one who cuts it, sugarcane does not lose its sweetness. Likewise, a noble person does not abandon good character and virtues even in adversity or weakness.
