muhūrtamapi jīvēchcha naraḥ śuklēna karmaṇā ।
na kalpamapi kaṣṭēna lōkadvayavirōdhinā ॥ 01 ॥
English Meaning:
Even if a person lives for only a moment, that life should be spent performing righteous and virtuous actions. It is not worthwhile to live for ages while performing deeds that bring suffering and harm in both this world and the next.
gatē śōkō na kartavyō bhaviṣyaṃ naiva chintayēt ।
vartamānēna kālēna vartayanti vichakṣaṇāḥ ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
One should not grieve over what has passed, nor should one constantly worry about the future. The wise live according to the present moment and attend to the duties before them.

English Meaning:
The gods are pleased by sincere devotion according to their nature, virtuous people by good conduct, and a father by the good qualities of his child. Relatives are pleased through hospitality such as bathing and food, while learned people are pleased by appropriate and gracious words.
āyuḥ karma cha vittaṃ cha vidyā nidhanamēva cha ।
pañchaitāni hi sṛjyantē garbhasthasyaiva dēhinaḥ ॥ 04 (4.1) ॥
English Meaning:
According to this traditional teaching, five things concerning a person—lifespan, karma, wealth, learning, and death—are determined while the embodied being is still in the womb.
ahō bata vichitrāṇi charitāni mahātmanām ।
lakṣmīṃ tṛṇāya manyantē tadbhārēṇa namanti cha ॥ 05 ॥
English Meaning:
How remarkable is the conduct of great souls! They regard wealth as insignificant like a blade of grass, yet when wealth comes to them, they bow humbly under its responsibility and weight.

English Meaning:
Where there is deep attachment, there is also fear of losing what one loves. Excessive attachment is the root of sorrow. Therefore, one should free oneself from unhealthy attachment and live peacefully.
anāgatavidhātā cha pratyutpannamatistathā ।
dvāvētau sukhamēdhētē yadbhaviṣyō vinaśyati ॥ 07 ॥
English Meaning:
The person who prepares for what is to come and the person who responds wisely to present circumstances both prosper. One who merely waits passively for the future may come to ruin.

rājānamanuvartantē yathā rājā tathā prajāḥ ॥ 08 ॥
English Meaning:
When the king is righteous, the people tend to become righteous; when the ruler is corrupt, the people may follow the same path. People often follow the example of their ruler—what the king is, so tends to be the kingdom.

mṛtō dharmēṇa saṃyuktō dīrghajīvī na saṃśayaḥ ॥ 09 ॥
English Meaning:
A person who lives without righteousness should be regarded as dead even while alive. One who lives according to dharma remains long-lived through his virtue, deeds, and lasting reputation even after physical death.
dharmārthakāmamōkṣāṇāṃ yasyaikō’pi na vidyatē ।
ajāgalastanasyēva tasya janma nirarthakam ॥ 10 ॥
English Meaning:
A person whose life pursues none of the four aims—dharma, artha, kama, and moksha—is compared to the useless teat hanging from a goat’s neck. Such a life is described as purposeless.

mana ēva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamōkṣayōḥ ॥ 12 ॥
English Meaning:
Attachment to sense objects causes bondage, while a mind free from attachment to them leads toward liberation. The mind itself is the principal cause of both bondage and freedom.
dēhābhimānē galitaṃ jñānēna paramātmani ।
yatra yatra manō yāti tatra tatra samādhayaḥ ॥ 13 ॥

daivāyattaṃ yataḥ sarvaṃ tasmātsantōṣamāśrayēt ॥ 14 ॥
English Meaning:
Who can have every desire of the mind fulfilled and remain happy? Since many things in life depend upon destiny and circumstances, one should therefore cultivate contentment.

tathā yachcha kṛtaṃ karma kartāramanugachChati ॥ 15 ॥
English Meaning:
Just as a calf finds its own mother among thousands of cows, so a person’s actions follow their doer wherever he goes. The consequences of one’s deeds ultimately reach the person who performed them.
anavasthitakāryasya na janē na vanē sukham ।
janō dahati saṃsargādvanaṃ saṅgavivarjanāt ॥ 16 ॥
English Meaning:
A person without stability in his duties finds neither true happiness among people nor in the forest. Association with people can create attachment, while merely going to the forest does not bring peace if attachment remains within. True happiness requires inner balance and freedom from unhealthy attachment.

tathā gurugatāṃ vidyāṃ śuśrūṣuradhigachChati ॥ 17 ॥

Just as water is found by digging steadily into the earth, a student who serves the guru with dedication and attentively learns from him acquires the knowledge imparted by the teacher.

tathāpi sudhiyaśchāryā suvichāryaiva kurvatē ॥ 18 ॥
English Meaning:
The fruits a person receives depend upon his actions, and his understanding is also shaped by his actions. Nevertheless, a wise person carefully considers a matter before undertaking any action.
ēkākṣarapradātāraṃ yō guruṃ nābhivandatē ।
śvānayōniśataṃ gatvā chāṇḍālēṣvabhijāyatē ॥ 19 ॥
English Meaning:
The verse gives a severe traditional consequence for one who fails to honor a guru who has taught even a single syllable: such a person is said to pass through many low births and be born among chandalas. The central teaching is to remain grateful and respectful toward one’s teacher.

English Meaning:
At the end of an age, even Mount Meru may move, and at the end of a cosmic cycle, the seven oceans may change their boundaries. But virtuous people never deviate from the truth, commitments, and principles they have accepted.
pṛthivyāṃ trīṇi ratnāni jalamannaṃ subhāṣitam ।
mūḍhaiḥ pāṣāṇakhaṇḍēṣu ratnasañjñā vidhīyatē ॥ 21 ॥
English Meaning:
There are three true jewels on earth: water, food, and pleasant speech. Fools regard pieces of stone as jewels, while the wise understand the value of these genuine treasures essential for life and human relationships.
