What is Avataaras?

SaiRam Brothers and Sisters,At the Lotus Feet of our Beloved Swami. We woulod like share with you the meaning of an Avataara’s and Bhagawan, Script by Karma Yogi Bakathinanda.WHAT IS AVATARA?
We have heard of “Aarohanam” and “Avarohanam” in music. The former means the cadence moving from a low pitch up to a high one; the latter means the cadence coming down from a high pitch to a low one. “Avataara” means the Lord who is in the highest realms of Paramapadam chooses to come “down to earth”. This descent is called “Avataara”.

WHO IS THIS BHAGAVAN?
Bhagavan has been defined as one who possesses all the six essential  qualities of Jnaana (Knowledge), Sakti (Power), Veerya (Valor), Tejas (Brilliance), Bala (Strength) and Aiswarya (Lordship). Ahirbudnya Siva himself says that it is only Sriman Narayana who possesses all these six qualities.

WHY SHOULD BHAGAVAN TAKE “AVTAARAS”?
Lord Krishna has made it clear in Bhagavad Gita
Yadhaa yadhaa hi Dharmasya Glaanir bhavathi Bhaaratha/
Abhyuthaanam Adharmasya Tad Aatmaanam srujaamyaham//

“Whenever there is a decline in the natural order of the Universe, whenever there is a rise in evil beyond certain limits, I manifest myself” and

Paritranaaya Saadhoonaam Vinaasaaya cha Dushkritaam/
Dharma Samsthapanaarthaayaya Sambhavami yugE yugE//

“To protect the virtuous, to destroy evil and to establish “Dharma’I recreate myself in every Yuga”.

HOW MANY TIMES HAS HE TAKEN “AVATAARAS”?
“Avtaaraa: asankhyeyah” – Avataaras are countless. There is a saying that the Lord Himself has not kept a tab on the number of Avataaras He had taken! Down from the Vedas to Puraanas, as many as 100 + Avataaras have been identified but only 10 as the main Avataaras.

WHY NO AVATAARAS SO FAR IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT IN THIS YUGA IS SAID TO BE WORST?
For this, we have to look at the length of Yuga reckoning.
Kali Yuga 432,000 human years
Dwaapara Yuga (Dwa =two) 2 times Kali = 864,000
Treta Yuga (Tre= three) 3 times kali = 1296,000
Krita Yuga (Kri= 4 ) 4times Kaliyuga = 1728,000
Total 4320.000 or 4.32 million
= 1 Mahayuga
So, there are-
4 Avataaras in Krita (Matsya, Koorma, Varaaha and Nrisimha)
3 Avataaras in Treta Yuga (Vaamana, Parasuraama and Sri Rama)
2 Avataaras in Dwaapara yuga (Balaraama and Krishna)
1 Avataara in Kaliyuga (Sree Bhagawan Satya Sai Baba)Karmayogi Bhakthinanda Your Brother in Sai

What is Avataaras? – A Divine Understanding Of God’s Descent

What is Avataaras? is a deep spiritual question that helps devotees understand the compassionate way in which the Divine comes closer to humanity. In simple words, an Avatar is the descent of God in a form that human beings can see, love, follow, and understand. The Divine takes form not because God is limited, but because human beings need guidance, protection, inspiration, and love.

In every age, when righteousness becomes weak and people forget truth, compassion, and self-control, divine guidance becomes necessary. The Avatar comes to restore balance, awaken faith, and remind humanity of its sacred purpose. The Divine form may appear human, but the mission is universal. The Avatar lives among people, speaks their language, shares their joys and sorrows, and guides them toward higher living.

What is Avataaras? teaches that God’s descent is an act of mercy. The Avatar does not come for personal gain, fame, power, or comfort. The Avatar comes to uplift mankind. Through teachings, actions, miracles, service, and love, the Avatar helps people move from ignorance to wisdom, from fear to faith, and from selfishness to selfless service.

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba often explained that the purpose of divine descent is to awaken the divinity already present within every human being. An Avatar does not merely ask people to worship a form. He teaches them to purify their own hearts, control the mind, serve others, and realize that God lives within all. This is the deeper meaning of spiritual life.

What is Avataaras? also reminds us that divine forms may differ according to time, place, and need. Rama came as the embodiment of dharma and noble conduct. Krishna came as the teacher of wisdom, love, and divine play. Shirdi Sai Baba taught faith, patience, surrender, and unity. Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba emphasized love all, serve all and help ever, hurt never. The forms may differ, but the divine purpose is one.

The Avatar’s life becomes a living scripture. Every word, action, smile, correction, and blessing carries meaning. Sometimes the Avatar teaches through discourses, sometimes through silence, sometimes through service, and sometimes through personal experiences given to devotees. The outer event may look simple, but the inner lesson can be life-changing.

What is Avataaras? becomes meaningful only when devotees understand the message behind divine life. If people only admire miracles but do not change their conduct, they miss the deeper purpose. Miracles may attract attention, but transformation is the real goal. When anger becomes patience, pride becomes humility, and selfishness becomes service, the Avatar’s grace is truly working.

An Avatar also teaches unity. God is not limited by one religion, one language, one country, or one tradition. Divine love belongs to all. A true Avatar does not divide humanity. He brings people together and teaches them to respect every sincere path. The same Divine can be called by many names, yet the truth behind all names is one.

What is Avataaras? also teaches that the Avatar’s compassion is both gentle and firm. Divine love comforts the suffering, but it also corrects the ego. Sometimes grace gives joy, and sometimes it gives a lesson. Sometimes it removes difficulty, and sometimes it gives strength to face difficulty. Whatever form it takes, divine grace works for the spiritual growth of the soul.

The presence of an Avatar gives hope to humanity. In times of confusion, fear, materialism, and moral weakness, the Avatar reminds people that life is not meant only for worldly success. Human birth is meant for realizing truth, practicing love, serving society, and experiencing God within. This message gives direction to individuals, families, and nations.

What is Avataaras? finally reminds us that devotion to the Avatar should become practical. It is not enough to sing, pray, or speak about divine glory. A devotee must live the message through kind speech, honest actions, self-control, humility, and service. The best worship of the Avatar is a transformed life.

In the end, What is Avataaras? is a question that leads the heart toward divine understanding. An Avatar is God’s love made visible, God’s wisdom made practical, and God’s compassion made active in the world. When devotees recognize this truth and follow the teachings sincerely, their lives become filled with faith, peace, purpose, and divine grace.
