Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 10

dhanahīnō na hīnaścha dhanikaḥ sa suniśchayaḥ ।
vidyāratnēna hīnō yaḥ sa hīnaḥ sarvavastuṣu ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
A person without wealth is not truly inferior, nor is a wealthy person necessarily superior. One who lacks the precious jewel of knowledge is truly deficient in every respect.

dṛṣṭipūtaṃ nyasētpādaṃ vastrapūtaṃ pibējjalam ।
śāstrapūtaṃ vadēdvākyaḥ manaḥpūtaṃ samācharēt ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
One should place one’s foot only after carefully observing, drink water after filtering it through cloth, speak words guided by scripture and wisdom, and act with a pure mind.

sukhārthī chēttyajēdvidyāṃ vidyārthī chēttyajētsukham ।
sukhārthinaḥ kutō vidyā sukhaṃ vidyārthinaḥ kutaḥ ॥ 03 ॥

English Meaning:
One who seeks comfort must give up the pursuit of learning, while one who seeks knowledge must sacrifice comfort. How can one who desires only pleasure attain knowledge, and how can one devoted to learning expect constant comfort?

kavayaḥ kiṃ na paśyanti kiṃ na bhakṣanti vāyasāḥ ।
madyapāḥ kiṃ na jalpanti kiṃ na kurvanti yōṣitaḥ ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
What is there that poets cannot perceive? What is there that crows will not eat? What is there that drunkards will not say? And what is there that women cannot do? The verse uses exaggerated comparisons to describe different tendencies and dispositions.

raṅkaṃ karōti rājānaṃ rājānaṃ raṅkamēva cha ।
dhaninaṃ nirdhanaṃ chaiva nirdhanaṃ dhaninaṃ vidhiḥ ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
Fate can turn a pauper into a king and a king into a pauper. It can make the wealthy poor and the poor wealthy. Thus, worldly circumstances are never permanent.

lubdhānāṃ yāchakaḥ śatrurmūrkhānāṃ bōdhakō ripuḥ ।
jārastrīṇāṃ patiḥ śatruśchaurāṇāṃ chandramā ripuḥ ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
To a greedy person, a beggar is like an enemy; to a fool, a person who gives advice is like an enemy. To an unfaithful woman, her husband is regarded as an enemy, while to thieves the moon is an enemy because its light makes stealing more difficult.

yēṣāṃ na vidyā na tapō na dānaṃ
jñānaṃ na śīlāṃ na guṇō na dharmaḥ ।
tē martyalōkē bhuvi bhārabhūtā
manuṣyarūpēṇa mṛgāścharanti ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
Those who possess neither learning, austerity, charity, knowledge, good conduct, virtue, nor righteousness are merely a burden upon the earth. They wander in human form like animals.

antaḥsāravihīnānāmupadēśō na jāyatē ।
malayāchalasaṃsargānna vēṇuśchandanāyatē ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
Advice is of no use to one who lacks inner substance or the capacity to understand it. Just as bamboo does not become sandalwood merely by growing near the Malaya mountain, association alone does not make an unworthy person virtuous.

yasya nāsti svayaṃ prajñā śāstraṃ tasya karōti kim ।
lōchanābhyāṃ vihīnasya darpaṇaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati ॥ 09 ॥

English Meaning:
What can scripture accomplish for a person who lacks his own wisdom and discernment? What use is a mirror to one who has no eyes?

durjanaṃ sajjanaṃ kartumupāyō nahi bhūtalē ।
apānaṃ śātadhā dhautaṃ na śrēṣṭhamindriyaṃ bhavēt ॥ 10 ॥

English Meaning:
There is no easy means on earth to transform a wicked person into a truly virtuous one. Just as washing an impure bodily organ a hundred times does not make it a superior organ, external cleansing alone does not change one’s inherent nature.

āptadvēṣādbhavēnmṛtyuḥ paradvēṣāddhanakṣayaḥ ।
rājadvēṣādbhavēnnāśō brahmadvēṣātkulakṣayaḥ ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
Hatred toward one’s own people may lead to death, while hostility toward others may cause loss of wealth. Enmity with a king may bring destruction, and hatred toward Brahman or sacred knowledge is said to bring ruin to the family.

varaṃ vanaṃ vyāghragajēndrasēvitaṃ
drumālayaṃ patraphalāmbusēvanam ।
tṛṇēṣu śayyā śatajīrṇavalkalaṃ
na bandhumadhyē dhanahīnajīvanam ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
It is better to live in a forest inhabited by tigers and elephants, sustaining oneself on leaves, fruits, and water, sleeping upon grass and wearing old bark garments, than to live among relatives in poverty and humiliation.

viprō vṛkṣastasya mūlaṃ cha sandhyā
vēdaḥ śākhā dharmakarmāṇi patram ।
tasmānmūlaṃ yatnatō rakṣaṇīyaṃ
Chinnē mūlē naiva śākhā na patram ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
A Brahmin is compared to a tree: Sandhya worship is its root, the Vedas are its branches, and righteous actions are its leaves. Therefore, the root must be carefully protected, for when the root is cut, neither branches nor leaves can remain.

mātā cha kamalā dēvī pitā dēvō janārdanaḥ ।
bāndhavā viṣṇubhaktāścha svadēśō bhuvanatrayam ॥ 14 ॥

English Meaning:
For one whose mother is Goddess Lakshmi and whose father is Lord Janardana, whose relatives are devotees of Lord Vishnu, the entire three worlds are regarded as his homeland.

ēkavṛkṣasamārūḍhā nānāvarṇā vihaṅgamāḥ ।
prabhātē dikṣu daśasu yānti kā tatra vēdanā ॥ 15 ॥

English Meaning:
Birds of many colors gather upon one tree, but at dawn they fly away in the ten directions. Likewise, people meet and separate in this world; therefore, one should not be overwhelmed by attachment.

buddhiryasya balaṃ tasya nirbuddhēścha kutō balam ।
vanē siṃhō yadōnmattaḥ maśakēna nipātitaḥ ॥ 16 ॥

English Meaning:
True strength belongs to the one who possesses wisdom; what use is physical strength without intelligence? Even a mighty, intoxicated lion in the forest can be troubled and defeated by a tiny mosquito. Thus, intelligence is more valuable than mere physical power.

kā chintā mama jīvanē yadi harirviśvambharō gīyatē
nō chēdarbhakajīvanāya jananīstanyaṃ kathaṃ nirmamē ।
ityālōchya muhurmuhuryadupatē lakṣmīpatē kēvalaṃ
tvatpādāmbujasēvanēna satataṃ kālō mayā nīyatē ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
O Lord who sustains the entire universe, if You are the support of my life, why should I worry about my existence? If it were necessary for an infant’s survival, who would provide milk in the mother’s breast? O Lord of the Yadus, O Lord of Lakshmi, reflecting again and again in this way, I spend my time constantly serving Your lotus feet.

gīrvāṇavāṇīṣu viśiṣṭabuddhi-
stathāpi bhāṣāntaralōlupō’ham ।
yathā sudhāyāmamarēṣu satyāṃ
svargāṅganānāmadharāsavē ruchiḥ ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning:
Though I possess a special appreciation for the divine language, Sanskrit, I am still attracted to other languages. Just as the gods, despite possessing nectar, may delight in the sweetness of the lips of celestial maidens, so I find pleasure in other languages as well.

annāddaśaguṇaṃ piṣṭaṃ piṣṭāddaśaguṇaṃ payaḥ ।
payasō’ṣṭaguṇaṃ māṃsāṃ māṃsāddaśaguṇaṃ ghṛtam ॥ 19 ॥

English Meaning:
Flour is described as ten times more potent than whole grain, milk as ten times more potent than flour, meat as eight times more potent than milk, and ghee as ten times more potent than meat.

śōkēna rōgā vardhantē payasā vardhatē tanuḥ ।
ghṛtēna vardhatē vīryaṃ māṃsānmāṃsaṃ pravardhatē ॥ 20 ॥

English Meaning:
Sorrow is said to increase illness, milk nourishes and strengthens the body, ghee increases vitality, and meat contributes to the growth of bodily flesh. This verse reflects traditional ancient views concerning diet and nourishment.
