Chanakya Neethi – Chapter 8

adhamā dhanamichChanti dhanamānau cha madhyamāḥ ।
uttamā mānamichChanti mānō hi mahatāṃ dhanam ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
The inferior seek wealth, the mediocre seek both wealth and honor, while the noble seek honor. For great people, honor itself is the greatest wealth.

ikṣurāpaḥ payō mūlaṃ tāmbūlaṃ phalamauṣadham ।
bhakṣayitvāpi kartavyāḥ snānadānādikāḥ kriyāḥ ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
Even after consuming sugarcane, water, milk, roots, betel, fruits, or medicine, one may still perform bathing, charity, and other prescribed religious activities.

dīpō bhakṣayatē dhvāntaṃ kajjalaṃ cha prasūyatē ।
yadannaṃ bhakṣayatē nityaṃ jāyatē tādṛśī prajā ॥ 03 ॥

English Meaning:
A lamp consumes darkness but also produces soot. Likewise, the food a person regularly consumes influences the nature and qualities of the offspring.

vittaṃ dēhi guṇānvitēṣu matimannānyatra dēhi kvachit
prāptaṃ vārinidhērjalaṃ ghanamukhē mādhuryayuktaṃ sadā ।
jīvānsthāvarajaṅgamāṃścha sakalānsañjīvya bhūmaṇḍalaṃ
bhūyaḥ paśya tadēva kōṭiguṇitaṃ gachChantamambhōnidhim ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
O wise person, give your wealth to those who are virtuous and deserving, rather than giving it away indiscriminately. Just as the water of the ocean rises through clouds, becomes sweet rain, nourishes all living beings, and eventually returns to the ocean many times over, wealth given to worthy causes returns multiplied through the welfare it creates.

chāṇḍālānāṃ sahasraiścha sūribhistattvadarśibhiḥ ।
ēkō hi yavanaḥ prōktō na nīchō yavanātparaḥ ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
In this verse, within its ancient social context, a Yavana is described as inferior even in comparison with thousands of chandalas and wise seers. The statement reflects a historical social viewpoint found in the text.

tailābhyaṅgē chitādhūmē maithunē kṣaurakarmaṇi ।
tāvadbhavati chāṇḍālō yāvatsnānaṃ na chācharēt ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
After an oil massage, contact with funeral-pyre smoke, sexual intercourse, or shaving, a person is considered ritually impure until bathing is performed. This reflects ancient ideas concerning ritual purity.

ajīrṇē bhēṣajaṃ vāri jīrṇē vāri balapradam ।
bhōjanē chāmṛtaṃ vāri bhōjanāntē viṣāpaham ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
Water acts like medicine during indigestion. After food has been digested, water provides strength. Water taken with food is compared to nectar, while water taken after the meal is described as counteracting harmful effects.

hataṃ jñānaṃ kriyāhīnaṃ hataśchājñānatō naraḥ ।
hataṃ nirṇāyakaṃ sainyaṃ striyō naṣṭā hyabhartṛkāḥ ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
Knowledge without action becomes ineffective, while a person is ruined by ignorance. An army without capable leadership is destroyed, and the verse, reflecting its ancient social context, describes women without husbands as being left vulnerable.

vṛddhakālē mṛtā bhāryā bandhuhastagataṃ dhanam ।
bhōjanaṃ cha parādhīnaṃ tisraḥ puṃsāṃ viḍambanāḥ ॥ 09 ॥

English Meaning:
The death of one’s wife in old age, wealth falling into the hands of relatives, and dependence upon others even for one’s food are described as three painful and humiliating conditions for a man.

English Meaning:
The study of the Vedas is incomplete without Agnihotra, and religious acts are incomplete without charity. Spiritual accomplishment cannot arise from outward actions alone; sincere devotion and inner feeling are essential.

na dēvō vidyatē kāṣṭhē na pāṣāṇē na mṛṇmayē ।
na bhāvēna vinā siddhistasmādbhāvō hi kāraṇam ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
The Divine is not limited merely to objects made of wood, stone, or clay. Without sincere devotion and inner feeling, worship does not lead to spiritual attainment. Therefore, genuine spiritual feeling is essential.

kāṣṭhapāṣāṇadhātūnāṃ kṛtvā bhāvēna sēvanam ।
śraddhayā cha tathā siddhistasya viṣṇuprasādataḥ ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
Worship of a deity represented in wood, stone, or metal, when performed with sincere devotion and faith, can lead to spiritual attainment. Such attainment ultimately comes through the grace of Lord Vishnu.

na dēvō vidyatē kāṣṭhē na pāṣāṇē na mṛnmayē ।
bhāvē hi vidyatē dēvastasmādbhāvō hi kāraṇam ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
The Divine is not confined to wood, stone, or clay. The Divine is present through the sincere feeling of the devotee. Therefore, faith and devotion are more important than the external object of worship.

śāntitulyaṃ tapō nāsti na santōṣātparaṃ sukham ।
apatyaṃ cha kalatraṃ cha satāṃ saṅgatirēva cha ॥ 14 ॥

English Meaning:
There is no austerity equal to peace, and no happiness greater than contentment. Good children, a worthy spouse, and the company of virtuous people are regarded as great blessings in life.

guṇō bhūṣayatē rūpaṃ śīlaṃ bhūṣayatē kulam ।
prāsādaśikharasthō’pi kākaḥ kiṃ garuḍāyatē ॥ 15 ॥

English Meaning:
Virtue enhances beauty, and good character ennobles a family. Even if a crow sits upon the pinnacle of a palace, does it become Garuda? Merely occupying a high position does not change one’s true nature.

nirguṇasya hataṃ rūpaṃ duḥśīlasya hataṃ kulam ।
asiddhasya hatā vidyā hyabhōgēna hataṃ dhanam ॥ 16 ॥

English Meaning:
Beauty is wasted when a person lacks virtue, and a person of bad character brings disgrace upon the family. Knowledge that is not put into practice is wasted, and wealth that is never put to proper use is also lost in value.

śuddhaṃ bhūmigataṃ tōyaṃ śuddhā nārī pativratā ।
śuchiḥ kṣēmakarō rājā santōṣō brāhmaṇaḥ śuchiḥ ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
Water found beneath the earth is regarded as pure, a devoted wife as pure, a king who works for the welfare of his people as virtuous, and a contented Brahmin as pure.

asantuṣṭā dvijā naṣṭāḥ santuṣṭāścha mahībhṛtaḥ ।
salajjā gaṇikā naṣṭā nirlajjāścha kulāṅganā ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning:
Discontented twice-born persons are said to lose their dignity, while a ruler without contentment may bring ruin upon his kingdom. In the ancient social context of the verse, it also states that a courtesan who becomes modest loses her profession, while a shameless woman of a respectable household brings disgrace upon her family.

kiṃ kulēna viśālēna vidyāhīnēna dēhinām ।
duṣkulaṃ chāpi viduṣō dēvairapi sa pūjyatē ॥ 19 ॥

English Meaning:
What is the value of belonging to a great family if one lacks knowledge? In contrast, even a person born into a humble family is worthy of respect because of learning and wisdom.

vidvānpraśasyatē lōkē vidvān sarvatra pūjyatē ।
vidyayā labhatē sarvaṃ vidyā sarvatra pūjyatē ॥ 20 ॥

English Meaning:
A learned person is praised in the world and honored everywhere. Through knowledge one can attain many things, and knowledge itself is respected everywhere.

māṃsabhakṣyaiḥ surāpānairmukhaiśchākṣaravarjitaiḥ ।
paśubhiḥ puruṣākārairbhārākrāntā hi mēdinī ॥ 21 ॥

English Meaning:
Those who indulge in meat-eating, intoxicating drink, and impure or meaningless speech are compared to animals in human form. Such people are described as making the earth burdened by their presence.

annahīnō dahēdrāṣṭraṃ mantrahīnaścha ṛtvijaḥ ।
yajamānaṃ dānahīnō nāsti yajñasamō ripuḥ ॥ 22 ॥

English Meaning:
A kingdom may be ruined by lack of food, a priest lacking the proper mantras can ruin a sacrifice, and a yajamana who does not give charity makes the sacrifice incomplete. A wrongly performed or incomplete sacrifice can become highly harmful, and the verse therefore describes it as having no enemy equal to it.
