English Meaning:
The happiness and peace enjoyed by those who are satisfied with the nectar of contentment can never be experienced by those who constantly run here and there in pursuit of wealth.

English Meaning:
One should be content with three things: one’s spouse, food, and wealth. But one should never be satisfied with three others: study, spiritual recitation, and charity. These should be pursued continually.

English Meaning:
An elephant can be controlled with an elephant goad, a horse by the hand or reins, a horned animal with a stick, and a wicked person through the deterrence of a sword.

English Meaning:
The strength of kings lies in their physical might and valor. The strength of one who knows Brahman lies in spiritual knowledge. The supreme strength attributed to women is described as beauty, youth, and sweetness.

Chidyantē saralāstatra kubjāstiṣṭhanti pādapāḥ ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
One should not be excessively simple or naive. Go to the forest and observe: straight trees are cut down, while crooked trees remain standing. Thus, simplicity should be accompanied by wisdom and caution.

English Meaning:
The true preservation of acquired wealth lies in its proper use and charitable giving. Just as water stored in a reservoir remains useful when it has an outlet and circulation, wealth remains meaningful when it is properly put into use.

English Meaning:
Excessive anger, harsh speech, poverty, hostility toward one’s own people, association with base persons, and servitude to the ignoble are described as signs of a life resembling hell.

English Meaning:
If one goes to the lion’s den, one may obtain a precious pearl from an elephant’s head. The teaching is that one’s company and environment greatly influence what one gains.

śunaḥ puchChamiva vyarthaṃ jīvitaṃ vidyayā vinā ।
na guhyagōpanē śaktaṃ na cha daṃśanivāraṇē ॥ 19 ॥

English Meaning:
Life without knowledge is compared to a dog’s tail—it neither serves to cover anything properly nor provides useful protection. Education and wisdom give meaningful value and purpose to life.

vāchāṃ śauchaṃ cha manasaḥ śauchamindriyanigrahaḥ ।
sarvabhūtadayāśauchamētachChauchaṃ parārthinām ॥ 20 ॥

English Meaning:
Purity of speech, purity of mind, control of the senses, and compassion toward all living beings constitute true purity. For one who seeks the welfare of others, these are the marks of genuine cleanliness and virtue.

puṣpē gandhaṃ tilē tailaṃ kāṣṭhē’gniṃ payasi ghṛtam ।
ikṣau guḍaṃ tathā dēhē paśyātmānaṃ vivēkataḥ ॥ 21 ॥

English Meaning:
Just as fragrance exists within a flower, oil within sesame seeds, fire within wood, ghee within milk, and jaggery within sugarcane, so should one discern and recognize the presence of the Self within the body through wisdom and discrimination.
