anṛtaṃ sāhasaṃ māyā mūrkhatvamatilōbhitā ।
aśauchatvaṃ nirdayatvaṃ strīṇāṃ dōṣāḥ svabhāvajāḥ ॥ 01 ॥

English Meaning:
This traditional verse describes falsehood, recklessness, deception, foolishness, excessive greed, impurity, and lack of compassion as inherent faults attributed to women.

bhōjyaṃ bhōjanaśaktiścha ratiśaktirvarāṅganā ।
vibhavō dānaśaktiścha nālpasya tapasaḥ phalam ॥ 02 ॥

English Meaning:
The availability of good food, the ability to enjoy it, the capacity for love and pleasure, wealth, and the power to give generously are described as blessings resulting not from little austerity, but from great spiritual merit and past good deeds.

yasya putrō vaśībhūtō bhāryā Chandānugāminī ।
vibhavē yaścha santuṣṭastasya svarga ihaiva hi ॥ 03 ॥

English Meaning:
For one whose son is obedient, whose wife is understanding and supportive, and who remains content with his prosperity, this very life is like heaven.

tē putrā yē piturbhaktāḥ sa pitā yastu pōṣakaḥ ।
tanmitraṃ yatra viśvāsaḥ sā bhāryā yatra nirvṛtiḥ ॥ 04 ॥

English Meaning:
Those are true sons who are devoted to their father, and that is a true father who supports and nurtures his son. A true friend is one in whom trust can be placed, and a true wife is one with whom peace and contentment are found.

parōkṣē kāryahantāraṃ pratyakṣē priyavādinam ।
varjayēttādṛśaṃ mitraṃ viṣakumbhaṃ payōmukham ॥ 05 ॥

English Meaning:
One should avoid a friend who harms one’s interests in one’s absence while speaking sweetly to one’s face. Such a person is like a vessel that appears filled with milk but contains poison within.

na viśvasētkumitrē cha mitrē chāpi na viśvasēt ।
kadāchitkupitaṃ mitraṃ sarvaṃ guhyaṃ prakāśayēt ॥ 06 ॥

English Meaning:
One should never trust a bad friend, and even with a good friend one should exercise discretion, because if a friend becomes angry, they may reveal all one’s secrets.

mantrēṇa rakṣayēdgūḍhaṃ kāryē chāpi niyōjayēt ॥ 07 ॥

English Meaning:
A plan conceived in the mind should not be revealed through speech before the proper time. It should be protected through wise counsel and secrecy and then put into action.

kaṣṭaṃ cha khalu mūrkhatvaṃ kaṣṭaṃ cha khalu yauvanam ।
kaṣṭātkaṣṭataraṃ chaiva paragēhanivāsanam ॥ 08 ॥

English Meaning:
Foolishness is certainly painful, and youth can also bring many difficulties. But living in another person’s house is even more troublesome than either of these.

English Meaning:
Rubies are not found on every mountain, nor are pearls found in every elephant. Likewise, virtuous people are not found everywhere, just as sandalwood trees do not grow in every forest.

nītijñāḥ śīlasampannā bhavanti kulapūjitāḥ ॥ 10 ॥

English Meaning:
Wise parents should continually train their sons in various virtues and good conduct. Children who understand ethical principles and possess good character become honored within their family.

mātā śatruḥ pitā vairī yābhyāṃ bālā na pāṭhitāḥ ।
sabhāmadhyē na śōbhantē haṃsamadhyē bakō yathā ॥ 11 ॥

English Meaning:
Parents who fail to educate their children are compared to their children’s enemies. Uneducated children do not shine in an assembly of learned people, just as a crane does not blend gracefully among swans.

lālanādbahavō dōṣāstāḍanē bahavō guṇāḥ ।
tasmātputraṃ cha śiṣyaṃ cha tāḍayēnna tu lālayēt ॥ 12 ॥

English Meaning:
Excessive pampering can produce many faults, while discipline can cultivate many virtues. Therefore, children and disciples should be guided through proper discipline rather than merely indulged.

abandhyaṃ divasaṃ kuryāddānādhyayanakarmabhiḥ ॥ 13 ॥

English Meaning:
Not even a day should be allowed to pass without meaningful activity. One should make the day fruitful by learning even a verse, half a verse, a quarter of a verse, or a few syllables, and by engaging in virtuous acts such as charity.

kāntāviyōgaḥ svajanāpamānaṃ
ṛṇasya śēṣaṃ kunṛpasya sēvā ।
dāridryabhāvādvimukhaṃ cha mitraṃ
vināgninā pañcha dahanti kāyam ॥ 14 ॥

English Meaning:
Separation from a beloved, humiliation by one’s own people, remaining debt, service under an unjust ruler, and a friend who turns away because of poverty—these five burn a person without any physical fire.

nadītīrē cha yē vṛkṣāḥ paragēhēṣu kāminī ।
mantrahīnāścha rājānaḥ śīghraṃ naśyantyasaṃśayam ॥ 15 ॥

nirdhanaṃ puruṣaṃ vēśyā prajā bhagnaṃ nṛpaṃ tyajēt ।
khagā vītaphalaṃ vṛkṣaṃ bhuktvā chābhyāgatō gṛham ॥ 17 ॥

English Meaning:
A courtesan abandons a man who has become poor; subjects abandon a defeated or powerless king. Birds leave a tree once its fruits are gone, and a guest departs after receiving food and hospitality.

gṛhītvā dakṣiṇāṃ viprāstyajanti yajamānakam ।
prāptavidyā guruṃ śiṣyā dagdhāraṇyaṃ mṛgāstathā ॥ 18 ॥

English Meaning:
A person who befriends one who is immoral, ill-fated, associated with harmful circumstances, or wicked is likely to suffer decline and destruction quickly.

vāṇijyaṃ vyavahārēṣu divyā strī śōbhatē gṛhē ॥ 20 ॥

Affection flourishes among equals; service is appropriate in the presence of a king; commerce belongs in business dealings; and a virtuous woman brings grace and harmony to the household.
