śarīraṃ surūpaṃ tathā vā kalatraṃ
yaśaśchāru chitraṃ dhanaṃ mēru tulyam ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 1 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि शरीर सुंदर हो, पत्नी या जीवनसाथी उत्तम हो, चारों दिशाओं में सुंदर और प्रसिद्ध यश हो तथा मेरु पर्वत के समान अपार धन हो, लेकिन यदि मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में आसक्त नहीं है, तो इन सबका क्या लाभ? फिर क्या है, फिर क्या है?

English Meaning:
Even if one possesses a beautiful body, an excellent spouse, glorious fame in all directions, and wealth as immense as Mount Meru, what is the use if the mind is not devoted to the lotus feet of the Guru? What then is the real gain?

kalatraṃ dhanaṃ putra pautrādisarvaṃ
gṛhō bāndhavāḥ sarvamētaddhi jātam ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 2 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि पत्नी, धन, पुत्र-पौत्र और समस्त परिवार हों, घर हो तथा अनेक संबंधी और अपने लोग हों, लेकिन मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में स्थित नहीं है, तो इन सबका क्या लाभ?

English Meaning:
Even if one has a spouse, wealth, children, grandchildren, a home, relatives, and every worldly relationship, what is the benefit if the mind is not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru?

ṣaḍxaṅgādivēdō mukhē śāstravidyā
kavitvādi gadyaṃ supadyaṃ karōti ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 3 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि वेदों के षडंग आदि का ज्ञान हो, मुख से शास्त्रों की विद्या का प्रवाह होता हो और व्यक्ति कविता, गद्य तथा सुंदर पद्य रचने में निपुण हो, लेकिन मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में समर्पित नहीं है, तो इस विद्वत्ता का क्या लाभ?

English Meaning:
Even if one has mastered the six limbs of the Vedas and various scriptural sciences, and is skilled in composing prose, poetry, and beautiful verses, what is the value of such learning if the mind is not devoted to the lotus feet of the Guru?

vidēśēṣu mānyaḥ svadēśēṣu dhanyaḥ
sadāchāravṛttēṣu mattō na chānyaḥ ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 4 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि व्यक्ति विदेशों में सम्मानित हो, अपने देश में प्रतिष्ठित और धन्य माना जाए तथा सदाचार और श्रेष्ठ आचरण में उसके समान कोई दूसरा न हो, लेकिन उसका मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में नहीं लगा है, तो इन सभी सम्मान और प्रतिष्ठाओं का क्या लाभ?

English Meaning:
Even if one is honored in foreign lands, respected in one’s own country, and unequalled in virtuous conduct, what is the value of all such honor and distinction if the mind is not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru?

kṣamāmaṇḍalē bhūpabhūpalabṛbdaiḥ
sadā sēvitaṃ yasya pādāravindam ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 5 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि पृथ्वी पर राजाओं और महान शासकों के समूह द्वारा किसी के चरणकमलों की सदैव सेवा की जाती हो, फिर भी यदि उसका मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में नहीं लगा है, तो उस राजकीय सम्मान और प्रतिष्ठा का क्या लाभ?

English Meaning:
Even if one’s feet are constantly honored and served by kings and great rulers of the earth, what is the use of such royal respect if the mind is not devoted to the lotus feet of the Guru?

jagadvastu sarvaṃ karē yatprasādāt ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 6 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि दान और पराक्रम के कारण मेरी कीर्ति सभी दिशाओं में फैल गई हो और गुरु की कृपा से संसार की समस्त वस्तुएँ मेरे अधिकार में आ गई हों, लेकिन मन गुरु के चरणकमलों में नहीं लगा है, तो उस यश और संपत्ति का क्या लाभ?

English Meaning:
Even if one’s fame spreads in every direction through generosity and valor, and by the Guru’s grace all the possessions of the world come within one’s reach, what is the benefit if the mind is not devoted to the lotus feet of the Guru?

na bhōgē na yōgē na vā vājirājau
na kantāmukhē naiva vittēṣu chittam ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 7 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि मन भोगों में नहीं, योग में नहीं, घोड़ों और राजसी वैभव में नहीं, प्रिय के मुख में नहीं और धन-संपत्ति में भी नहीं लगा है, लेकिन गुरु के चरणकमलों में भी मन नहीं लगा, तो फिर इसका क्या लाभ?

English Meaning:
Even if the mind is detached from pleasures, worldly enjoyments, yogic attainments, royal possessions, the face of a beloved, and wealth, what is the benefit if it is still not devoted to the lotus feet of the Guru?

araṇyē na vā svasya gēhē na kāryē
na dēhē manō vartatē mē tvanardhyē ।
manaśchēna lagnaṃ gurōraṅghripadmē
tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim ॥ 8 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
यदि मेरा मन न वन में लगता है, न अपने घर में, न सांसारिक कार्यों में और न ही शरीर के प्रति आसक्त है, फिर भी यदि वह गुरु के चरणकमलों में स्थित नहीं है, तो ऐसी विरक्ति का क्या लाभ?

English Meaning:
Even if my mind is attached neither to the forest nor to my own home, neither to worldly duties nor to the body, what is the value of such detachment if the mind is not established at the lotus feet of the Guru?

gurōraṣṭakaṃ yaḥ paṭhētpurāyadēhī
yatirbhūpatirbrahmachārī cha gēhī ।
lamēdvāchChitāthaṃ padaṃ brahmasañjñaṃ
gurōruktavākyē manō yasya lagnam ॥ 9 ॥

हिंदी अर्थ:
जो व्यक्ति गुरु अष्टक का पाठ करता है—चाहे वह संन्यासी हो, राजा हो, ब्रह्मचारी हो या गृहस्थ—और जिसका मन गुरु के वचनों में दृढ़ता से लगा हुआ है, वह अपनी इच्छित परम अवस्था को प्राप्त करता है, अर्थात् ब्रह्मस्वरूप परम पद को प्राप्त करता है।

English Meaning:
Whoever recites this Guru Ashtakam—whether a renunciate, king, celibate, or householder—and whose mind remains firmly devoted to the words of the Guru, attains the desired supreme state, the ultimate state known as Brahman.
