The Fleeting Nature of Things

The Fleeting Nature of Things

lifeTime is the rat that cuts off the thread of lire in this universe. There is nothing in this world which the all-devouring time will spare. Time spares not even the greatest person for a moment. Time pervades and controls all things. Time dances about with a long chain of the bones of the dead hanging from its neck to its feet. It assumes the formidable form of a burning fire during the dissolution and reduces the whole world to ashes. Nothing can stop its course. Man grieves for his folly at the time of death. The same body which is clothed today in silk and decorated with garlands is to be burnt to ashes tomorrow. Just as the frog that is hanging in a serpent’s throat, is yet desirous of eating flies, even so men of the world are desirous of enjoying the worldly objects although they are being swallowed by the serpent of time. You see others dying and growing old, yet you never wake up from your own dream of the vanity of worldly life.

If God has not covered this filthy body with the skin, will it not be eaten away by crows and eagles? The filth that comes out of our nose, mouth, ears, and anus causes extreme disgust in us. Would it be possible for us to take food if we were to see the filth that is inside our body? Will not germs begin to manifest if the filth of the body is not washed for three days? Can this obnoxious smell which has permeated the body from toenail to the top of the head be removed by application of saffron, sandal-paste, refined camphor, scents, etc.? Is he not a fool who takes too much care of the body? Do they not who delighted to look at the body sitting on the throne of kings, shudder to lock at it when life is snatched away by Death?

The three entrances to the city of perdition are lust, wealth and tongue. He who has conquered these three need not be afraid of death. He has no enemies, who ride on the horse of discrimination with the sword of dispassion and the shield of en durance.

Application of soap to the body, oil to the hair, powder to the face, looking into the mirror a thou sand and one times a day, wearing rings on the fingers these and many like these will intensify your attachment to the body. Therefore give up all these things ruthlessly.

A big boil is washed with lotion. Then boric ointment is applied. Then bandage is put on. Even so, this nasty body is a very big boil. It is washed every day. Food is thrust into it. This is the ointment. Cloth is worn. This is the bandage. Sannyasins treat this body as a very big boil or wound with an oozing discharge. But the body is worshipped by worldly-minded persons on account of delusion and infatuation.

The Fleeting Nature of Things – Detachment, Wisdom, and Inner Stability

The Fleeting Nature of Things teaches us that everything in the outer world is temporary. What appears today may disappear tomorrow. What gives pleasure now may later become a cause of worry. Wealth, beauty, health, relationships, success, praise, comfort, and power all change with time. A wise person observes this truth carefully and learns not to depend completely on passing objects for lasting peace.

Human life is full of movement. Childhood becomes youth, youth becomes old age, and the body slowly loses its strength. Thoughts change, emotions change, opinions change, and circumstances change. Even the people and situations we are deeply attached to cannot remain exactly the same. This constant change reminds us that worldly life is uncertain and cannot provide permanent security.

The Fleeting Nature of Things also helps us understand why attachment creates suffering. The mind wants pleasant experiences to continue forever. It says, “This joy should remain,” “This person should never change,” “This success should always stay,” and “This comfort should not end.” But life does not move according to personal desire. When change comes, the attached mind feels pain.

Vedanta teaches that the temporary should be known as temporary. This does not mean we must hate the world or reject life. It means we should live with awareness. We can love, serve, work, enjoy simple blessings, and fulfill duties, but we should not forget that everything outer is subject to change. This understanding brings maturity and balance.

The Fleeting Nature of Things is seen in nature itself. Flowers bloom and fade. Seasons come and go. Rivers flow continuously. Clouds gather and disappear. The sun rises and sets every day. Nature silently teaches that change is not an accident; it is part of worldly existence. The wise learn from this and become less rigid in their expectations.

Many people suffer because they search for permanent happiness in temporary objects. They believe that more money, more recognition, more pleasure, or more control will finally bring complete satisfaction. But after one desire is fulfilled, another desire rises. The mind keeps running from one object to another, yet lasting contentment remains distant.

The real problem is not change itself, but wrong expectation. If we expect the changing world to give unchanging peace, disappointment becomes unavoidable. A person who understands impermanence becomes more grateful and less possessive. They enjoy what comes, accept what goes, and remain inwardly steady.

The Fleeting Nature of Things should awaken Vairagya, or detachment. Detachment does not mean coldness, sadness, or carelessness. It means freedom from blind clinging. A detached person can love deeply without possessiveness, work sincerely without anxiety, and live fully without being enslaved by results. Such a person has inner strength.

Spiritual wisdom points the seeker toward the unchanging self. The body changes, the mind changes, and experiences change, but the witnessing awareness remains present through all conditions. This inner witness knows joy and sorrow, success and failure, gain and loss, yet remains untouched in its essence. To discover this witness is to find real peace.

Meditation helps us experience this truth directly. Sit quietly and observe the breath, body, thoughts, emotions, and desires. Notice how every mental movement appears and disappears. Nothing stays permanently in the mind. Behind all these changing waves, awareness remains calm and steady. Resting in that awareness gives freedom from unnecessary fear.

The Fleeting Nature of Things becomes a powerful teacher when difficulties arise. Loss, failure, separation, and disappointment can make the heart bitter, or they can make it wise. If the seeker reflects deeply, pain reveals the limitation of attachment and turns the mind toward higher truth. Suffering then becomes a doorway to spiritual growth.

This understanding also improves daily conduct. When we know that life is short and uncertain, we stop wasting time in hatred, jealousy, pride, and useless arguments. We become more kind, forgiving, humble, and sincere. We learn to value love, service, prayer, self-control, and inner peace more than temporary excitement.

Good company and scripture strengthen this vision. The teachings of saints and sages remind us again and again that worldly things are passing, but the Divine truth is eternal. Satsang, prayer, mantra repetition, selfless service, and study help the mind rise above narrow attachment and develop spiritual steadiness.

A mature seeker does not become depressed by impermanence. Instead, they become awake. They understand that every moment is precious and should be used wisely. Life should be lived with gratitude, discipline, compassion, and remembrance of the higher goal. The temporary world becomes a field for learning, service, and purification.

In the end, The Fleeting Nature of Things is a reminder to seek the eternal beyond the changing. Outer objects come and go, relationships shift, the body ages, and circumstances rise and fall. But the true self remains peaceful, luminous, and free. Through discrimination, detachment, meditation, devotion, and self-knowledge, the seeker rises above fear and discovers lasting peace within.
