Yagnopavita Dharana
“gāyantaṃ trāyatē iti gāyatrī”
ōṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ suvaḥ ॥
tatsaviturvarēṇyaṃ bhargō dēvasya dhīmahi ।
dhiyō yō naḥ prachōdayāt ॥
Gayatri means that which protects and uplifts the one who chants it.
The Gayatri Mantra is a sacred prayer to the divine Sun, Savita, asking for the illumination of our intellect and guidance towards righteousness, wisdom, and spiritual awakening.
apavitraḥ pavitrō vā sarvāvasthāṃ gatō’pi vā ।
yaḥ smarēt puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ sa bāhyābhyantaraśśuciḥ ॥
Whether one is pure or impure, or in any condition of life, remembering the lotus-eyed Lord Vishnu makes a person purified both externally and internally.
ōṃ āchamya ।
ōṃ kēśavāya svāhā ।
ōṃ nārāyaṇāya svāhā ।
ōṃ mādhavāya svāhā ।
ōṃ gōvindāya namaḥ ।
ōṃ viṣṇavē namaḥ ।
ōṃ madhusūdanāya namaḥ ।
Āchamanam is a sacred purification practice where the divine names of Lord Vishnu are remembered while sipping water. It purifies the body, speech, and mind before beginning spiritual prayers and rituals.
uttiṣṭhantu । bhūta piśāchāḥ ।
yē tē bhūmibhārakāḥ ।
yē tēṣāmavirōdhēna ।
brahmakarma samārabhē ।
ōṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ suvaḥ ॥
May all negative energies, obstacles, and disturbing forces depart. With a peaceful and purified environment, I begin this sacred spiritual practice dedicated to Brahman.
ōṃ bhūḥ । ōṃ bhuvaḥ । ōṃ suvaḥ । ōṃ mahaḥ ।
ōṃ janaḥ । ōṃ tapaḥ । ōṃ satyam ।
ōṃ tatsaviturvarēṇyaṃ bhargō dēvasya dhīmahi ।
dhiyō yō naḥ prachōdayāt ॥
ōṃ āpō jyōtī rasō’mṛtaṃ brahma bhūr bhuvaḥ suvarōm ॥
This sacred Prāṇāyāma mantra connects the breath with the divine cosmic energy. It invokes the higher realms and purifies the body, mind, and life force through the power of the Gayatri Mantra.
mamōpātta duritakṣayadvārā śrī paramēśvara prītyartham ।
śubhē śōbhanē muhūrtē mahāviṣṇōrājñayā pravartamānasya ।
adyabrahmaṇaḥ dvitīyaparārthē śvētavarāhakalpē ।
vaivaśvatamanvantarē kaliyugē prathamapādē ।
jambhūdvīpē bharatavarṣē bharatakhaṇḍē ।
śubhatithau śrīmān ——– gōtrasya ——– nāmadhēyasya ।
nūtana yajñōpavītadhāraṇaṃ kariṣyē ॥
I undertake this sacred resolve for the removal of my accumulated faults and for the pleasure of Lord Parameshwara. According to the command of Lord Mahavishnu, in this auspicious time and sacred moment, belonging to the present cosmic age and place, I perform the sacred ritual of wearing a new Yajñopavita (sacred thread) for spiritual purity, discipline, and fulfillment of my duties.
yajñōpavīta prāṇa pratiṣṭhāpanaṃ kariṣyē ॥
ōṃ asunītē punarasmāsu chakṣuḥ punaḥprāṇamiha nō dhēhi bhōgam ।
jyōkpaśyēma sūryamuchchara-ntamanumatē mṛḍayā naḥ svasti ॥
I invoke life and divine energy into the sacred thread. May our sight, life force, and blessings be restored. May we always behold the rising Sun and receive divine grace, protection, and well-being.
yajñōpavītē tasya mantrasya paramēṣṭi parabrahmarṣiḥ ।
paramātma dēvatā । dēvī gāyatrī chandaḥ ।
yajñōpavīta dhāraṇē viniyōgaḥ ॥
This sacred mantra of the Yajñopavita has Paramesthi Parabrahma as its seer, the Supreme Self as its deity, and Gayatri as its meter. It is used for the sacred wearing of the Yajñopavita.
yajñōpavītaṃ paramaṃ pavitraṃ prajāpatēryat sahajaṃ purastāt ।
āyuṣyamagryaṃ pratimuñcha śubhraṃ yajñōpavītaṃ balamastu tējaḥ ॥
This sacred thread is supremely pure and was born together with Prajapati at the beginning of creation. May this pure Yajñopavita bless me with long life, strength, spiritual energy, and divine brilliance.
upavītaṃ chinnatantuṃ jīrṇaṃ kaśmaladūṣitam ।
visṛjāmi yaśō brahmavarcō dīrghāyurastu mē ॥
ōṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ॥
I discard this old and worn sacred thread whose threads are broken and which has become impure. May I receive renewed glory, spiritual radiance, and long life. May there be peace, peace, and peace.
chatussāgara paryantaṃ gō brāhmaṇēbhyaḥ śubhaṃ bhavatu ।
——– pravarānvita ——– gōtrōtpanna ——– śarma
ahaṃ bhō abhivādayē ॥
May auspiciousness and welfare prevail for cows and Brahmins throughout the entire world extending up to the four oceans. I respectfully introduce myself with my lineage, gotra, and ancestral tradition.
yasya smṛtyā cha nāmōktyā tapassandhyā kriyādiṣu
nyūnaṃ sampūrṇatāṃ yāti sadyō vandē tamachyutam ।
mantrahīnaṃ kriyāhīnaṃ bhaktihīnaṃ ramāpatē
yatkṛtaṃ tu mayā dēva paripūrṇaṃ tadastu mē ॥
I bow to Lord Achyuta, by whose remembrance and by whose divine name, any shortcomings in prayers, austerities, Sandhya rituals, and sacred actions become complete. O Lord of Lakshmi, even if my worship is lacking in mantras, actions, or devotion, may whatever I have performed become perfect through Your grace.
anēna yajñōpavīta dhāraṇēna,
śrī lakṣmīnārāyaṇa prēraṇāya,
śrī lakṣmīnārāyaṇa prīyantāṃ varadō bhavatu ।
śrī kṛṣṇārpaṇamastu ॥
Through this sacred act of wearing the Yajñopavita, may Lord Lakshmi Narayana be pleased and may He bless me with His divine grace and boons. May this offering be dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna.
kāyēna vāchā manasēndriyairvā
buddhyātmanā vā prakṛtēḥ svabhāvāt ।
karōmi yadyat sakalaṃ parasmai
śrīmannārāyaṇāyēti samarpayāmi ॥
Whatever I perform through my body, speech, mind, senses, intellect, soul, or according to my natural tendencies, I surrender everything unto the Supreme Lord Sri Narayana.
