Sri Sathya Sai There is God in that Rock

There is God in that Rock

A noted geologist who heads the Geology Department of a major University was witness to one of Baba’s materializations. Baba picked up a rough piece of granite to ask the scientist what it contained. The geologist mentioned some minerals. Baba insisted, “I don’t mean those, but something deeper.” He continued, “Well molecules, atoms, electrons, protons…” Baba wasn’t satisfied, “No, no, no, go deeper still.” The geologist professed his ignorance. The Baba took the rock, blew on it, and gave it back to the geologist. The geologist was flabbergasted, for the rock had been transformed into a statue of Krishna playing the divine flute. Baba admonished him, “You see, beyond your atoms and all, God was in the rock, God is sweetness and joy. Break off Krishna’s foot and taste it”.The geologist found no difficulty in breaking the statue and tasting the foot. It was candy with a sweetness all its own. No wonder Howard Murphet one of Baba’s biographers, has said, “Sciencegives but the first word; the last word is known only to the great spiritual scientists like Sai Baba.”If Baba can transform rock into God… and we have the geologist’s word for it – then why not the human being already charged with the divine afflatus or divinely imparted knowledge?Apart from his own prodigious spiritual image which encompasses millions of devotees, Baba uses the 3000 and more Sai spiritual educational, and social service institutions throughout the world to spread His message with the objective of transforming the common people into a race of enlightened Godmen and Godwowen.

There is God in that Rock – A Sacred Vision of Divine Presence

Faith becomes truly deep when a person begins to see the Divine not only in temples, scriptures, or sacred images, but in every part of creation. There is God in that Rock is a powerful spiritual expression that teaches us to look beyond outer appearance and recognize the hidden divinity present everywhere. A rock may seem lifeless to ordinary eyes, but to a devotee, even a simple stone can become a symbol of divine presence, patience, strength, and silent grace.

The world often teaches us to value only what is beautiful, useful, or expensive. People admire shining jewels, tall buildings, and decorated idols, but they may ignore a plain rock lying on the ground. Yet spirituality changes the way we see. There is God in that Rock reminds us that the Divine is not limited by human ideas of beauty or importance. God can be felt in the smallest particle, the quietest corner, and the simplest object when the heart is filled with devotion.

A rock stands silently through heat, rain, wind, and time. It does not complain, it does not boast, and it does not seek attention. In this silence, there is a deep lesson for human beings. The spiritual seeker must also learn patience, firmness, and humility. There is God in that Rock teaches that divine wisdom is often hidden in stillness. The more silent the heart becomes, the more clearly it begins to feel the presence of God.

In many spiritual traditions, stones and rocks have been treated as sacred. Temples are built from stone, idols are carved from stone, and pilgrims walk across rocky paths with faith in their hearts. The same rock that seems ordinary to one person may become holy to another because devotion gives meaning to it. The difference is not always in the rock; the difference is in the vision of the devotee.

There is God in that Rock also teaches the idea of oneness. If God is truly everywhere, then no part of creation is outside His presence. The earth, sky, trees, rivers, mountains, animals, and human beings all exist within divine consciousness. When we understand this, our relationship with the world becomes more respectful. We stop treating nature as something to exploit and begin to see it as sacred.

A devotee who sees God in a rock learns to see God in people also. This is very important. It is easy to worship a stone image in a temple, but difficult to respect a person who thinks differently, speaks harshly, or lives in poverty. True devotion asks us to go deeper. If we can feel divine presence in a rock, we must also learn to see the same presence in every heart. This understanding creates compassion.

There is God in that Rock is not about blind belief. It is about developing a sacred way of seeing. The physical eyes may see only shape, color, and weight, but the inner eye sees meaning. To the spiritual heart, the rock becomes a reminder that God is steady, silent, and always present. Just as a rock remains firm, divine grace also remains firm even when life keeps changing.

Human life is full of movement. Thoughts change, emotions change, relationships change, and circumstances change. In the middle of all this change, the heart longs for something permanent. A rock becomes a symbol of that permanence. It reminds us that beneath the noise of life, there is a still truth that never changes. That truth is the Divine.

There is God in that Rock can also be understood as a lesson in humility. Human beings often become proud because of knowledge, wealth, position, or beauty. But a simple rock carries no pride. It accepts its place silently and serves creation in its own way. It becomes part of mountains, paths, temples, homes, and sacred spaces. It teaches that service does not always need recognition.

Sometimes, God chooses the simplest things to teach the greatest truths. A flower teaches beauty, a river teaches flow, the sun teaches giving, and a rock teaches stability. If the heart is awake, every object becomes a teacher. The devotee does not need to search for God only in distant places. The Divine can be felt in the present moment, in the ordinary world, and even in a silent stone.

There is God in that Rock also reminds us that devotion transforms perception. Without faith, a rock is only a rock. With faith, it becomes a symbol of divine nearness. This does not mean that we worship matter blindly. It means that we respect the divine power that exists behind all matter. The form may be simple, but the presence behind it is infinite.

In the end, There is God in that Rock is a sacred reminder that God is not far away from us. He is not limited to heaven, temples, rituals, or holy books. He is present in creation, in silence, in nature, and in the pure heart of the devotee. When our vision becomes pure, the whole world becomes a temple.

The true spiritual journey begins when we stop asking where God is and start learning how to see Him. A rock on the roadside, a mountain standing tall, a stone used in worship, or a quiet piece of earth can all remind us of divine presence. The message is simple yet powerful: everything in creation carries the touch of the Creator. A heart filled with faith can truly say, There is God in that Rock.
