Encounter with Lord Krishna
Long ago, in the age of the Mahabharata, there lived a brave and extraordinary warrior named Barbarika. He was the son of Ghatotkacha and Maurvi and the grandson of the mighty Pandava Bhima. From childhood, Barbarika was known for his courage, devotion, kindness, and deep respect for his mother. He had a strong desire to become a great warrior, but he also understood that true strength was meant to protect the weak and support those who needed help. His life became especially meaningful because of his devotion to Lord Krishna. The famous Encounter with Lord Krishna became one of the most important moments in the story of Barbarika, who is worshipped today as Khatushyam Ji.
Barbarika was a gifted warrior and performed intense prayers to please the divine powers. Through his devotion and determination, he received three powerful and special arrows. These arrows were not ordinary weapons. They possessed extraordinary divine power and could accomplish whatever Barbarika intended. One arrow could identify the objects that needed to be protected, another could mark the objects that needed to be destroyed, and the third could complete the task. With these three arrows, Barbarika became nearly unbeatable. His mother, Maurvi, was proud of his courage but also taught him that power should always be guided by righteousness, compassion, and wisdom.
Before the great war of Kurukshetra began, Barbarika decided to go toward the battlefield. He wanted to witness the historic battle and, if necessary, use his strength to help the side that needed support. His mother reminded him of a promise he had made: he would always support the weaker side in a battle. Barbarika accepted this responsibility with complete sincerity. Carrying his three divine arrows and riding his magnificent blue horse, he began his journey toward Kurukshetra.
As Barbarika travelled toward the battlefield, Lord Krishna came to know about this extraordinary warrior. Krishna understood that Barbarika possessed immense power and that his promise to always support the weaker side could create a strange situation. If Barbarika helped one side because it was weaker, that side might quickly become stronger. He would then change sides and support the other weaker side. In this way, the battle could continue endlessly. Therefore, Krishna decided to meet Barbarika and test his understanding of duty, strength, and sacrifice. This meeting is remembered as the Encounter with Lord Krishna.
Krishna approached Barbarika in the appearance of an ordinary Brahmin. He wished to understand the warrior’s abilities before revealing His divine identity. Krishna asked Barbarika where he was going and why he was carrying only three arrows. Barbarika respectfully explained that he was travelling to the battlefield of Kurukshetra and that his three arrows were enough to defeat an entire army. Krishna listened carefully and then asked whether Barbarika could prove the power of his arrows.
Barbarika confidently agreed. Krishna pointed toward a nearby tree covered with many leaves and asked him to demonstrate his skill. Barbarika took one of his divine arrows and released it. The arrow began moving swiftly through the air and marked every leaf on the tree. Krishna quietly placed one leaf beneath His foot. The arrow still searched for the final leaf. It eventually came to Krishna’s foot and circled around it, showing that the leaf was hidden underneath. Barbarika immediately understood that the mysterious Brahmin possessed extraordinary knowledge and divine power. This moment made the Encounter with Lord Krishna even more remarkable.
Krishna then asked Barbarika an important question. He wanted to know which side the young warrior would support when he reached the battlefield. Barbarika answered honestly that he had promised his mother to fight for whichever side was weaker. Krishna understood the seriousness of this promise. He explained that if Barbarika joined the weaker side, the balance of the war would change again and again. The warrior’s power could therefore affect the entire outcome of the Mahabharata war.
Krishna then revealed that He had come to ask Barbarika for something greater than his weapons. He asked for his head as a sacrifice. Barbarika was surprised, but he realized that the request came from someone who was no ordinary person. Through his divine understanding, he recognized Lord Krishna. The Encounter with Lord Krishna transformed from a simple meeting into a test of the greatest kind. Barbarika understood that his life and strength belonged to the Divine.
Without hesitation, Barbarika accepted Krishna’s request. He offered his head with complete devotion. His sacrifice was not an act of defeat; it was an expression of supreme faith and surrender. Pleased with Barbarika’s devotion, Krishna granted him a special blessing. He promised that Barbarika would be worshipped in the future by people who sought courage, protection, hope, and divine grace. Krishna also declared that Barbarika would become famous by the name Shyam, and devotees would remember him with love as Khatushyam Ji.
Barbarika also requested permission to watch the great battle of Kurukshetra. Krishna granted his wish and placed his head on a high hill so that he could see the entire battle. From there, Barbarika witnessed the events of the Mahabharata. He saw warriors fighting with great courage, but he also understood a deeper truth. Behind the actions of the warriors, it was ultimately the divine will of Lord Krishna that guided the course of events. His vision helped reveal that human beings may believe they are achieving victory through their own strength, but divine wisdom remains greater than individual power.
The Encounter with Lord Krishna therefore teaches children an important lesson about humility. Barbarika was one of the most powerful warriors of his time, yet he did not allow his strength to make him arrogant. When he recognized the greatness of Krishna, he surrendered with faith. His story reminds us that having power is not as important as knowing how to use it wisely. True courage means being ready to choose what is right even when the decision is difficult.
The story also teaches the value of keeping promises. Barbarika took his mother’s words seriously and remained committed to helping the weaker side. His intention was compassionate, even though Krishna showed him that the situation was more complicated than he imagined. Children can learn from this that good intentions should always be guided by wisdom. Sometimes, doing the right thing requires understanding the larger picture rather than simply following our first thought.
The Encounter with Lord Krishna is also remembered because it connects Barbarika’s sacrifice with the devotion surrounding Khatushyam Ji. Devotees believe that the blessings associated with Shyam Baba continue to inspire people to remain faithful, humble, courageous, and compassionate. His story is especially meaningful for children because it combines adventure, divine mystery, bravery, devotion, and sacrifice. It teaches that the greatest heroes are not always those who win battles; sometimes, they are those who willingly sacrifice their own desires for a greater purpose.
Today, Khatushyam Ji is lovingly worshipped by millions of devotees. The story of Barbarika’s meeting with Krishna continues to be narrated in homes, temples, religious gatherings, and children’s devotional stories. The Encounter with Lord Krishna remains one of the most inspiring episodes connected with Khatushyam Ji because it shows how a mighty warrior became an example of surrender and faith. His life reminds every child that courage should be joined with kindness, strength with humility, and devotion with trust.
