English Meaning: I offer repeated salutations to Goddess Godā, who awakens the sleeping Lord Kṛṣṇa and teaches Him the supreme purpose established by the essence of the countless Śrutis; who, through her loving devotion and the garland she has worn, lovingly offers herself and her devotion to the Lord.

English Meaning: Āṇḍāḷ of fertile Puduvaṉ, rich with fresh crops, sang and offered to Lord Raṅganātha the many sacred verses of Tiruppāvai in sweet melody. She first wore the flower garland herself and then offered it to the Lord. O radiant divine maiden who wore and offered that garland, O ancient sacred maiden, O Goddess adorned with many bangles and capable of showering grace through song! You who sought Lord Veṅkaṭeśvara as your beloved, grant that we may never depart from this sacred path of loving devotion.

English Meaning: On this auspicious full-moon day of the month of Mārgaśīrṣa, O maidens adorned with beautiful ornaments, let us go for the sacred bath. O young girls of prosperous Āyarpāḍi, come! Lord Nārāyaṇa alone will grant us the fruit of our vow—the Lord who is the son of mighty Nandagopa, who carries a sharp spear, who is the lion-cub of lovely Yaśodā, whose body is dark like a rain cloud, whose eyes are reddish and beautiful, and whose face shines like the radiant full moon. Let us undertake this sacred vow so that the whole world may praise our devotion.

English Meaning: O maidens living in this world, listen to the disciplines we shall follow during our sacred Pāvai vow. We shall sing the glory of the Supreme Lord who reclines in the Ocean of Milk. We shall refrain from consuming ghee and milk, bathe early in the morning, avoid applying kohl to our eyes, and refrain from adorning our hair with flowers. We shall not perform forbidden acts or speak harsh words. We shall give charity to those who seek it, help those who are worthy, and rejoice while thinking of the welfare of all.

English Meaning: If we perform our sacred bath according to the Pāvai vow while singing the name of the Supreme Lord who measured all the worlds with His divine strides, no harm will befall the land. Rain will fall abundantly and at the proper times, three times each month; fish will play among the tall paddy fields; bees will rest and hum within beautiful flowers; and generous cows, with full udders, will fill the vessels with streams of milk. Thus, prosperity that never diminishes will flourish throughout the land.

English Meaning: O cloud, lord of the rain, do not withhold your grace. Enter the ocean, gather its waters, rise high and roar mightily. Become dark like the form of the Primordial Lord, flash like the discus held in the hand of the lotus-naveled Lord, and thunder like His conch. Then pour down rain continuously like the stream of arrows released from Lord Śārṅga’s bow, so that the world may prosper and we may joyfully perform our sacred Mārgaśīrṣa bath.

English Meaning: Let us remember the wondrous Lord who is the heroic son of ancient Mathurā, who dwells on the banks of the pure and mighty Yamunā, who appeared as a radiant light in the community of cowherds, and who brought glory to Mother Yaśodā—the Lord Dāmodara. Let us approach Him with purity, offer fragrant flowers at His feet, sing His name with our lips, and meditate upon Him in our hearts. Then our past sins and even those yet to arise will be destroyed like dust cast into fire.

English Meaning: See, the birds are chirping, and from the temple of the Lord whose banner bears Garuḍa comes the deep and beautiful sound of the conch. O maiden, arise! Remember the Lord who drank the poisonous milk of Pūtanā and destroyed the deceitful Śakaṭāsura by kicking him with His foot. The sages and yogis, holding within their hearts the primordial Lord who reclines upon Ananta in the Ocean of Milk, slowly rise while chanting His sacred name. May the resonance of that holy name enter our hearts and fill them with peace and joy.

English Meaning: O maiden still lying asleep, do you not hear the birds chirping and calling to one another all around? Do you not hear the melodious sound of the cowherd girls, their bangles jingling as they churn curd with their fragrant hair flowing? O noble maiden, will you continue sleeping even while we sing the name of Keśava, the embodiment of Lord Nārāyaṇa? O radiant one, open the door and come with us.

English Meaning: The eastern sky has become bright. The buffaloes are going out to graze and feed their little calves, and the other animals are also spreading out into the fields. We have come and stand here, calling you and keeping those who are going ahead from leaving without you. O beautiful maiden devoted to the sacred vow, arise! Let us sing the Lord’s name and receive the fruit of our vow. Let us worship Him who destroyed the horse-faced demon and defeated the mighty wrestlers. He is the God of gods; let us go to Him, serve Him, and receive His grace.

English Meaning: O daughter of our maternal uncle! Lamps are glowing all around your beautiful jeweled mansion, and fragrant incense fills the air, yet you remain asleep upon your bed. O mother, will you not awaken your daughter? Is she mute, deaf, or spellbound by some deep enchanted sleep? We are repeatedly chanting the many sacred names of the wondrous Lord—Māyā’s Master, Mādhava and the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha. Why does she still not awaken? Please wake her and let her join us.

English Meaning: O maiden who, through the observance of this sacred vow, is gaining the merit that leads to heaven, will you not answer us? Will you not open the door? We seek the sacred merit that grants the fruit of our vow by praising Lord Nārāyaṇa, who wears a fragrant garland of sacred tulasī. English Meaning: O golden creeper-like maiden of the cowherd clan, whose people milk many generous cows and possess the strength to defeat their enemies! O graceful maiden resembling a beautiful peacock, arise. All your companions have come into your courtyard and are singing the name of the Lord whose form is dark like a rain cloud. English Meaning: O noble maiden of such abundance that the buffaloes, lovingly thinking of their calves, let milk flow freely from their udders until the whole house becomes wet and muddy! We stand at your doorway with our heads wet from the cold dew. We are singing of the Lord who, in righteous anger, destroyed Rāvaṇa, the king of southern Laṅkā, and who is dear to the hearts of devotees. Now open your door and arise. English Meaning: We have already gone ahead singing the glory of the Lord who tore apart the beak of the bird-like demon and destroyed wicked forces. All the maidens have reached the place of the Pāvai vow. Venus has risen and Jupiter has set. O maiden with beautiful eyes, see, even the birds are chirping.

English Meaning: O my dear young parrot-like friend, are you still asleep? From within comes the reply, “Friends, do not call me like this; I am coming now.” They answer, “We already know your clever words. You are skilled at giving replies; if I were in your place, I would have come out myself. Come quickly—what other work could you have? Have all the girls arrived? Yes, everyone has come; count them yourself.” Then they sing the praises of the wondrous Lord who destroyed the mighty enemy and possesses the power to overcome all His adversaries.
