Vedanta and the Masses

Vedanta and the Masses

by Swami Sivananda

Vedanta is the highest rung in the spiritual ladder of the Hindu philosophy. Some over-enthusiastic religious leaders, in their impatience to get the masses overnight to the zenith of Vedanta, overlook and ignore the initial steps of Karma and Bhakti, with the inevitable result that the ignorant masses neither reach the top nor catch a glimpse of the first stages. The masses do not understand the subtlety and the ultimate import of the Advaita thought, much less do they apply it in the everyday routine of life. It is a matter of common experience that only a microscopic minority of the religious-minded people is putting Vedanta into practice; but with the majority Vedanta does not go beyond a mere intellectual assent. It is not for nothing that Sastras have laid down a certain course of Sadhana after which an aspirant can be initiated into this sublime thought. Only very few are eligible for Vedanta, because only a very few people are capable of that rigorous and sincere Sadhana. The masses require to be taught Bhakti and Karma which are easily intelligible to them. It is said that Swami Rama Tirtha repented for preaching Vedanta because he realised that all his gigantic efforts had brought forth no corresponding substantial result. Swami Vivekananda was severely criticised in his life for overstressing Vedanta and ignoring Bhakti. People want facts, hard and tangible facts, practical principles which they can easily grasp, easy clues to solve the riddles of life, intelligible and concrete ways to feel the nearness of God. Vedanta seems to them a science meant for intellectual jugglers and dry Pandits, its teachings fall upon their minds like rain on arid sands. They would rather have a grain of a practical hint than bushels of theoretical knowledge.

No doubt Vedanta contains the sublimest of truths, truths that need to be comprehended and applied in the daily walk of life but that is no excuse why one should ignore the allied truths which are equally great, if not greater. The Gita has elucidated in an inimitable manner the complementary nature of these various paths and has shown that Karma, Bhakti and Jnana are not competitive or alternative but the different ways to the same goal. So to preach Vedanta and especially the Advaita philosophy irrespective of time, place and person is carrying water in a sieve. You cannot teach Vedanta to anybody and everybody. The whole affair will become a square peg in a round hole.

In proportion to the greatness of a truth, misapplications and misinterpretations are bound to crop up round it. Just as many thoughtless politicians have misused the weapon of Satyagraha to enforce their selfish desires, many unwary lovers have brought about grim and poignant tragedies under the shelter of Platonic love, even so many crooked persons have exploited this weapon of Vedanta for their personal ends. Vedanta is a sharp razor which can be trusted only in the hands of a skilful and a saintly warrior, not in the hands of a child or an ignorant man. Tat Tvam Asi, Aham Brahmasmi are the watchwords of Vedanta and under their pretext many sins are committed, sometimes consciously, and sometimes unconsciously. A man who has imperfectly understood the real significance of these Mahavakyas and easily poses himself as knowing God without considering others as such, easily deceives himself about his intellectual and spiritual superiority and commits countless sins, because he thinks and foolishly thinks, that he is not the doer but only the witness in justification of wicked deeds.

Vedanta must be taught to a select few. Udia Baba teached Bhakti and Karma to the masses, to his disciples. He teached Vedanta to a select few only and did not allow the Bhaktas to attend his classes. Every intelligent teacher gives his teachings according to the temperamental leanings of the disciple. A promiscuous preaching of Vedanta will land the teacher and the taught in difficulties which may not be easily surmounted.

Vedanta and the Masses – Spiritual Wisdom, Equality, and Practical Life

Vedanta and the Masses is a powerful subject because Vedanta is not meant only for scholars, monks, or highly educated people. Its wisdom belongs to every human being. Vedanta teaches the unity of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the deeper truth behind life. If this knowledge remains locked in books, debates, and institutions, its purpose remains incomplete. True Vedanta must reach ordinary people and transform daily life.

Vedanta says that the real self is not merely the body, mind, caste, religion, status, wealth, or education. The true self is pure consciousness, peaceful, eternal, and divine. This teaching gives great dignity to human life. It tells every person that they are not weak, sinful, or helpless by nature. They may be covered by ignorance, fear, and limitation, but their inner essence is spiritual and pure.

Vedanta and the Masses teaches equality at the deepest level. Social differences may exist in outer life, but spiritually all beings are expressions of the same truth. The same divine presence shines in the rich and the poor, the learned and the unlearned, the strong and the weak. When this understanding becomes practical, hatred, pride, exploitation, and cruelty begin to lose their power.

The masses need Vedanta not as complicated philosophy, but as living strength. A hungry person needs food, a suffering person needs compassion, and a confused person needs hope. Vedanta should inspire service, kindness, education, honesty, and self-respect. It should not become dry intellectual talk. Its real test is whether it helps people become fearless, pure, disciplined, and loving.

Vedanta and the Masses also means bringing spiritual ideas into simple language. If philosophy is expressed only in difficult terms, common people may feel distant from it. The truths of Vedanta can be explained through daily life: the body changes, thoughts change, emotions change, but the witnessing awareness remains. This simple observation can open the door to deeper understanding.

Vedanta does not teach weakness. It teaches strength. Many people suffer because they identify only with limitations. They say, “I am poor,” “I am powerless,” “I am unworthy,” or “I cannot change.” Vedanta gives a higher message: the real self is not bound by these temporary conditions. This does not mean ignoring practical problems. It means facing them with inner courage and dignity.

One important application of Vedanta is service. If the same self lives in all beings, then serving others is not a favor done from superiority. It is worship of the divine in living form. Feeding the hungry, teaching the ignorant, helping the sick, protecting the weak, and speaking kindly become spiritual practices. Service becomes Vedanta in action.

Vedanta and the Masses should also awaken moral responsibility. If all life is connected, then harming others is harming ourselves at a deeper level. Dishonesty, cruelty, selfishness, and exploitation are not only social evils; they are signs of ignorance. Truthfulness, compassion, self-control, and generosity become natural when unity is understood.

Education plays a major role in bringing Vedanta to the masses. Education should not only train people for livelihood, but also build character. It should teach self-confidence, discipline, respect for others, purity of conduct, and awareness of inner strength. A person who knows their spiritual worth cannot easily be crushed by fear or temptation.

Vedanta also gives hope in suffering. Life may bring poverty, illness, loss, failure, and disappointment. Outer circumstances may not change immediately, but inner understanding can give strength. A person can learn to witness pain without losing the sense of deeper selfhood. This awareness does not remove all difficulty at once, but it prevents total inner defeat.

Vedanta and the Masses is especially important because spirituality should not create separation. If Vedanta produces pride in the learned and neglect of the poor, it is misunderstood. Real knowledge makes the heart humble. The wise person sees the same reality in all and therefore serves without ego. Knowledge and compassion must walk together.

The message of Vedanta can improve society when it becomes practical. It can reduce narrowness, caste pride, religious hatred, and selfish competition. It can teach people to see beyond outer labels and recognize the sacredness of life. A society guided by Vedantic values becomes more just, peaceful, and humane.

At the personal level, Vedanta teaches self-inquiry. A person may ask, “Who am I beyond body, name, profession, and changing thoughts?” This question slowly weakens ego and attachment. It helps the mind turn inward. Even a simple worker, farmer, student, parent, or householder can practice this reflection while living an active life.

In the end, Vedanta and the Masses means making spiritual wisdom accessible, practical, and life-giving. Vedanta should not remain only in temples, scriptures, or philosophical discussions. It should enter homes, schools, workplaces, villages, and hearts. When people understand their inner divinity and see the same divinity in others, life becomes noble. Through knowledge, service, equality, and compassion, Vedanta becomes a living force for individual freedom and social upliftment.
