Mythological Significance & History

The temple was built in the 18th century by Ahom King Rajeswar Singha. The 1897 earthquake damaged the structure, but it was restored, retaining the sanctum while the original dome was replaced with a corrugated iron sheet roof. Despite these changes, the temple still preserves its ancient spiritual aura.

Significance of the Temple

Each of the nine planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu — is represented by a Shiva Lingam, dressed in different colored cloths symbolizing each celestial deity.
The temple is believed to reduce planetary doshas (astrological afflictions) and bless devotees with prosperity and peace.
It is a hub of astrology and manuscripts, and many devotees perform special pujas to seek cosmic balance.
