Mahanyasam – 2. Panchamukha Dhyanam
ō-nnam ॥ tatpuru̠ṣāya vi̠dmahē̍ mahādē̠vāya̍ dhīmahi । tannō̍ rudraḥ prachōdayā̎t ॥
English Meaning
Om Naṃ. We contemplate Tatpuruṣa and meditate upon Mahādeva. May that Rudra inspire, guide, and illumine our intellect.
saṃvartāgni taṭitpradīpta kanaka prasparthi tējōmayam । gambhīradhvani sāmavēdajanaka-ntāmrādharaṃ sundaram । ardhēndudyuti lōlapiṅgaḻa jaṭābhāraprabaddhōragam । vandē siddha surāsurēndranamita-mpūrva-mmukhaṃ śūlinaḥ ॥
English Meaning
I bow to the eastern face of Lord Śūlin, radiant like the fire of cosmic dissolution and shining like lightning and brilliant gold. His deep and majestic sound gives rise to the sacred resonance of the Sāmaveda. His beautiful lips have a reddish hue, and His tawny matted locks shine with the crescent moon. A serpent is bound within His mass of matted hair. This divine face is worshipped by Siddhas and by the lords of gods and other celestial beings.

a̠ghōrē̎bhyō-‘thaghō̠rē̎bhyō̠ ghōra̠ghōra̍tarēbhyaḥ ॥ sarvē̎bhyassarva śarvē̎bhyō̠ nama̍stē astu ru̠drarū̍pēbhyaḥ ॥
English Meaning
Salutations to all the forms of Rudra—from the gentle and non-fearful forms to the fierce and exceedingly fierce forms. Salutations to all forms of Śarva and to every manifestation of Rudra.
kālābhrabhramarāñjanadyutinibhaṃ vyāvṛtta piṅgēkṣaṇam karṇōdbhāsita bhōgimastaka maṇiprōdgīrṇa daṃṣṭrāṅkuram । sarpaprōta kapāla śukti śakala vyākīrṇa sachChēkharam vandē dakṣiṇamīśvarasya kuṭila bhrūbhaṅga raudra-mmukham ॥
English Meaning
I bow to the fierce southern face of Īśvara, dark and radiant like a storm cloud, a black bee, and collyrium, with piercing tawny eyes. Serpents adorn His ears, their jewel-like hoods shining brightly, while sharp fangs appear from His mouth. His crown is adorned with fragments of skulls and shells intertwined with serpents. I bow to this powerful and formidable face of the Lord.

sa̠dyō jā̠ta-mpra̍padyā̠mi̠ sa̠dyō jā̠tāya̠ vai namō̠ nama̍ḥ । bha̠vē bha̍vē̠ nāti̍ bhavē bhavasva̠ mām । bha̠vō-dbha̍vāya̠ nama̍ḥ ॥
English Meaning
I take refuge in Sadyojāta. Repeated salutations to the One who is ever freshly manifested. In every form of existence, may You guide and protect me, and may I not remain bound by repeated worldly becoming. Salutations to the source from which all existence arises.
prālēyāchalamindukunda dhavaḻa-ṅgōkṣīraphēnaprabham bhasmābhyaktamanaṅga dēha dahana jvālāvaḻī lōchanam । brahmēndrādi marudgaṇaisputipadai rabhyarchitaṃ yōgibhiḥ vandē-‘haṃ sakala-ṅkaḻaṅkarahitaṃ sthāṇōrmukha-mpaśchimam ॥
English Meaning
I bow to the western face of Sthāṇu, white and radiant like a snowy mountain, the moon, jasmine, and the foam of milk. His body is covered with sacred ash, and His eyes shine with flames capable of consuming the power of desire. He is worshipped by Brahmā, Indra, the hosts of Maruts, and great Yogis. I bow to this pure and stainless face of the Lord.

vā̠ma̠dē̠vāya̠ namō̎ jyē̠ṣṭhāya̠ nam̍a-śśrē̠ṣṭhāya̠ namō̍ ru̠drāya̠ nama̠ḥ kālā̍ya̠ nama̠ḥ kala̍vikaraṇāya̠ namō̠ bala̍vikaraṇāya̠ namō̠ balā̍ya̠ namō̠ bala̍pramathanāya̠ nama̠-ssarva̍bhūtadamanāya̠ namō̍ ma̠nōnma̍nāya̠ nama̍ḥ ॥
English Meaning
Salutations to Vāmadeva, the Ancient One; salutations to the Greatest and Most Excellent One. Salutations to Rudra and to Kāla, the power of time. Salutations to the One who transforms the power of time, to the One who transforms and overcomes strength, to the source of strength, to the One who subdues overwhelming forces, to the One who restrains all beings, and to the One who transcends and elevates the mind.
gaura-ṅkuṅkuma paṅkilaṃ stilakaṃ vyāpāṇḍu gaṇḍasthalam bhrūvikṣēpa kaṭākṣa lasatsaṃsakta karṇōtphalam । snigdha-mbimbaphalādhara-mprahasita-nnīlālakāla-ṅkṛtam vandē pūrṇa śaśāṅka maṇḍalanibhaṃ vaktraṃ harasyōttaram ॥
English Meaning
I bow to the northern face of Hara, radiant and fair, adorned with a mark of kuṅkuma upon the forehead. His cheeks shine brightly, His raised eyebrows and graceful sidelong glance are captivating, and His ears are adorned with splendid ornaments. His lips are soft and beautiful like the bimba fruit, and His smiling face is framed by dark, flowing locks. His countenance shines like the full disc of the moon.

īśāna-ssarva̍vidyā̠nā̠-mīśvara-ssarva̍bhūtā̠nā̠-mbrahmādhi̍pati̠-rbrahma̠ṇō ‘dhi̍pati̠-rbrahmā̍ śi̠vō mē̍ astu sadāśi̠vōm ॥ (kaniṣṭhikābhyā-nnamaḥ)
English Meaning
Īśāna is the Lord of all knowledge and the ruler of all beings. He is the Lord of Brahmā and the Lord of the Vedic knowledge associated with Brahman. May that Brahman be auspicious to me. May the eternal Sadāśiva always bless and protect me. Salutations with the little fingers.
vyaktāvyakta guṇētara-mparataraṃ ṣaṭtriṃśatattvātmakam tasmāduttama tattvamakṣaramida-ndhyēyaṃ sadā yōgibhiḥ । ōṅkārādi samasta mantrajanakaṃ sūkṣmādi sūkṣma-mparaṃ śānta-mpañchamamīśvarasya vadana-ṅkhaṃvyāpti tējōmayam ॥
English Meaning
He transcends the manifest and unmanifest and is beyond the three guṇas. He is the Supreme Reality beyond the thirty-six principles of existence. This imperishable and highest Reality should always be meditated upon by Yogis. He is the source of all mantras beginning with Om, subtler than the subtlest, peaceful and radiant. This is the fifth face of Īśvara, pervading everything with divine light.

May Paśupati protect me in the East. May Śaṅkara protect me in the South.
paśchimē pātu viśvēśaḥ । nīlakaṇṭhastadōttarē ॥

May Viśveśa protect me in the West. May Nīlakaṇṭha protect me in the North.
īśānyā-mpātu mē śarvaḥ । āgnēyā-mpārvatīpatiḥ ।
English Meaning
May Śarva protect me in the northeast. May Pārvatīpati, the Lord of Pārvatī, protect me in the southeast.
naiṛtyā-mpātu mē rudraḥ । vāyavyā-nnīlalōhitaḥ ॥
English Meaning
May Rudra protect me in the southwest. May Nīlalohita protect me in the northwest.
ūrdhvē trilōchanaḥ pātu । adharāyā-mmahēśvaraḥ ।
English Meaning
May Trilocana, the Three-Eyed Lord, protect me above. May Maheśvara protect me below.
ētābhyō daśa digbhyastu । sarvataḥ pātu śaṅkaraḥ ॥
English Meaning
May Śaṅkara protect me from these ten directions and from every side.

A person who is not Rudra cannot truly worship Rudra. We shall now explain the procedure of Japa, Homa, Archana, and Abhiṣeka performed after Nyāsa.
