Harit Smriti

Harit Smriti, also known as Harita Smriti, is an ancient Hindu Smriti text traditionally associated with Sage Harita. It belongs to the broader Dharmashastra tradition, which deals with Dharma, ethical conduct, religious duties, social responsibilities, and proper ways of living. Teachings attributed to Harita are also referred to in other ancient Dharma literature.

Harit Smriti gives importance to truthfulness, purity, self-control, discipline, charity, religious observances, and good conduct. It discusses duties connected with different stages of life and provides guidance on personal behavior, family responsibilities, social relationships, rituals, and religious practices.

The Harita tradition is also associated with discussions of Achara, or proper conduct. It emphasizes that a righteous life requires not only knowledge of religious teachings but also disciplined behavior and respect for established Dharma. Like other Smriti texts, it reflects the social and religious ideas of the period in which these traditions developed.

The complete original form of Harit Smriti is not as widely preserved as some major Dharmashastra works. Much of the material attributed to Harita is known through manuscripts, quotations, and references in later Sanskrit literature. It remains useful for studying the history of Hindu law, ethics, and Dharma.
