Surya Ashtakam

Surya Ashtakam is the sacred hymn in praise of and as a prayer to Lord Surya, the radiant Sun God, who is also worshipped as Aditya, Bhaskara, Divakara, Ravi, Savita, Martanda, and by many other divine names. This devotional hymn glorifies Lord Surya as the source of light, life, energy, wisdom, and the sustainer of all creation.

Surya Ashtakam consists of eight beautiful verses, each describing the divine brilliance, supreme power, boundless compassion, and life-giving nature of Bhagwan Surya. Every stanza inspires devotion, gratitude, and reverence toward the Sun God. The benefits of chanting this sacred hymn are traditionally cherished by devotees. It is believed that reciting Surya Ashtakam with devotion promotes good health, vitality, success, prosperity, removes obstacles, and bestows the divine blessings of Lord Surya.

This sacred hymn is widely recited during daily sunrise worship, Sundays, Ratha Saptami, Makar Sankranti, Chhath Puja, and other auspicious occasions dedicated to Lord Surya. It encourages devotees to seek physical well-being, spiritual wisdom, and inner strength through sincere worship of the radiant Lord.

॥ सूर्याष्टकम् ॥

आदिदेव नमस्तुभ्यंप्रसीद मम भास्कर।

दिवाकर नमस्तुभ्यंप्रभाकर नमोऽस्तुते॥1॥

सप्ताश्वरथमारूढंप्रचण्डं कश्यपात्मजम्।

श्वेतपद्मधरं देवं तंसूर्यं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥2॥

लोहितं रथमारूढंसर्वलोकपितामहम्।

महापापहरं देवं तंसूर्यं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥3॥

त्रैगुण्यं च महाशूरंब्रह्माविष्णुमहेश्वरम्।

महापापहरं देवं तंसूर्यं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥4॥

बृंहितं तेजःपुञ्जं चवायुमाकाशमेव च।

प्रभुं च सर्वलोकानांतं सूर्यं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥5॥

बन्धूकपुष्पसङ्काशंहारकुण्डलभूषितम्।

एकचक्रधरं देवंतं सूर्यं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥6॥

तं सूर्यं जगत्कर्तारंमहातेजःप्रदीपनम्।

महापापहरं देवंतं सूर्यं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥7॥

तं सूर्यं जगतां नाथंज्ञानविज्ञानमोक्षदम्।

महापापहरं देवंतं सूर्यं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥8॥

Verse 1

Ādideva namastubhyaṁ prasīda mama Bhāskara।
Divākara namastubhyaṁ Prabhākara namo’stute॥1॥

Meaning:
O Primordial Lord, I bow before You. O Bhaskara (the giver of light), please be gracious to me. O Divakara, the creator of the day, and O Prabhakara, the source of all radiance, I offer my respectful salutations unto You.

Verse 2

Saptāśva-ratham ārūḍhaṁ pracaṇḍaṁ Kaśyapātmajam।
Śveta-padma-dharaṁ devaṁ taṁ Sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham॥2॥

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Surya, the mighty son of Sage Kashyapa, who rides a chariot drawn by seven magnificent horses and holds a white lotus, illuminating the entire universe with His divine brilliance.

Verse 3

Lohitaṁ ratham ārūḍhaṁ sarva-loka-pitāmaham।
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ Sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham॥3॥

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Surya, whose radiant reddish form shines brilliantly upon His celestial chariot. He is the revered grandsire of all the worlds and the divine Lord who destroys even the greatest sins.

Verse 4

Traiguṇyaṁ ca Mahāśūraṁ Brahmā-Viṣṇu-Maheśvaram।
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ Sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham॥4॥

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Surya, who embodies the three qualities of nature (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas), whose power reflects the divine essence of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara, and who removes all great sins.

Verse 5

Bṛṁhitaṁ tejaḥ-puñjaṁ ca vāyum ākāśam eva ca।
Prabhuṁ ca sarva-lokānāṁ taṁ Sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham॥5॥

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Surya, the boundless mass of divine light, who pervades the air and the sky, and who is the Supreme Lord and sustainer of all the worlds.

Verse 6

Bandhūka-puṣpa-saṅkāśaṁ hāra-kuṇḍala-bhūṣitam।
Eka-cakra-dharaṁ devaṁ taṁ Sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham॥6॥

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Surya, whose brilliant complexion resembles the vibrant Bandhuka flower, who is adorned with beautiful ornaments, and who rides the divine one-wheeled celestial chariot.

Verse 7

Taṁ Sūryaṁ jagat-kartāraṁ mahā-tejaḥ-pradīpanam।
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ Sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham॥7॥

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Surya, the creator and nourisher of the universe, whose immense radiance illumines all creation and whose divine grace removes every great sin.

Verse 8

Taṁ Sūryaṁ jagatāṁ nāthaṁ jñāna-vijñāna-mokṣadam।
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ Sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham॥8॥

Meaning:
I bow to Lord Surya, the Lord of the entire universe, who bestows wisdom, spiritual knowledge, self-realization, and liberation (Moksha), while destroying all accumulated sins.
