Lankeshwar Temple

Lankeshwar Temple is an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on a hilltop in the western part of Guwahati near Gauhati University. The temple is famous for its serene surroundings, panoramic views of the Brahmaputra River.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple’s history is linked with Ravana, the King of Lanka, who was a devout worshipper of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Ravana offered prayers at this very site, which is why the temple is called Lankeshwar (meaning “Lord of Lanka”). The temple has been an important Shaivite pilgrimage site for centuries.

Significance of the Temple

Devotees believe that visiting this temple washes away sins and grants spiritual peace.
The temple is especially significant during Maha Shivaratri and the holy month of Shravan, when thousands of devotees perform rituals here.
It is also considered a place for meditation, self-reflection, and connecting with nature, thanks to its tranquil hilltop setting.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple showcases traditional Assamese temple style, with a sanctum housing the Shiva Lingam.

Around 450–452 marble steps lead up to the temple, symbolizing a spiritual journey.

Along the steps, devotees encounter small shrines dedicated to deities like Lord Hanuman and Shani Dev.

The hilltop location offers breathtaking views of Guwahati city and the Brahmaputra River.
