The Shri Kali Devi Mandir is located in Patiala city, Punjab, and is one of the most venerable Kali temples in North India.

Dedicated to Maa Kalika, this temple draws thousands of devotees daily and sees especially heavy crowds during Navratri festivals.

History of the Temple

Known as a Manokamna Siddha Peeth (Desire‑fulfillment shrine) and Jayanti Peetha, it is believed that the deity manifests here to grant devotees’ heartfelt wishes.

Legends say the idol is self‑manifested (Swayambhu), worshipped even by Pandavas and Lord Krishna in ancient times. The present marble structure dates to around 1764 AD, constructed and renovated with the support of local families (Thok Brahmins & Jogis) and devotees.

Architecture of the Temple

The central shrine is dodecagonal (12‑sided), built primarily in white marble and pumice stone, with a 36‑arched verandah encircling it. Its tower (“shikhara”) rises in a simple yet dignified style.


The sanctum houses a black stone idol of Maa Kali, surrounded by fragrant flowers and devotional items. Several Dharamshalas (pilgrim rest houses) exist around the temple. On festivals, the courtyard and lanes fill with stalls selling prasad, incense, and devotional items
