Shastra is a Sanskrit term meaning scripture, treatise, teaching, or systematic body of knowledge. In Indian traditions, the word is used for many kinds of texts that preserve knowledge about spirituality, philosophy, religion, ethics, science, arts, society, and daily life. Shastra literature has played an important role in preserving and transmitting India’s intellectual and cultural heritage.
Hindu Shastra literature includes many different subjects. Dharma Shastra discusses duties, ethics, conduct, and social responsibilities, while Artha Shastra deals with governance, administration, economics, and statecraft. Yoga Shastra explains yogic philosophy and practices, and Vastu Shastra deals with traditional principles of architecture and spatial planning. Other Shastras cover grammar, medicine, music, astronomy, literature, rituals, and philosophy.
Shastra texts are found across different Indian philosophical and religious traditions. They provide systematic explanations rather than only stories or devotional narratives. Many works also contain discussions of Dharma, knowledge, self-discipline, spiritual practice, reasoning, and liberation.
The study of Shastra therefore offers a broad view of Indian philosophy, sacred literature, traditional knowledge, ethics, science, arts, and cultural practices.
