Lord Durga Maa

Goddess Durga seated on tiger with divine weapons and sacred blessings

Lord Durga Maa, also known as Maa Durga, is one of the most revered goddesses in Hinduism. She represents divine feminine power, courage, protection, and the victory of good over evil. The word “Durga” is often associated with the one who removes difficulties and protects devotees from danger. She is worshipped with deep faith throughout India and by Hindu communities around the world.

Maa Durga is traditionally depicted riding a lion or tiger, symbolizing strength, fearlessness, and control over powerful forces. She has multiple arms, each holding a divine weapon or sacred object given to her by different gods. These weapons represent the various powers of righteousness and the ability to overcome evil, ignorance, and negative influences. Her calm and compassionate expression reflects her role as a loving mother who protects her children.

One of the most celebrated stories of Maa Durga is her battle with the demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu tradition, Mahishasura had become extremely powerful and threatened the gods and the world. Maa Durga emerged as the embodiment of divine Shakti and fought him in a great battle. Her victory over Mahishasura symbolizes the triumph of dharma, truth, and righteousness over arrogance and evil.

Maa Durga is especially worshipped during Navratri, a nine-night festival dedicated to her different forms. Devotees observe prayers, fasting, devotional singing, and special rituals during this sacred period. Durga Puja is another major celebration, particularly associated with West Bengal and several other parts of India.
