Lord Chandra Dev

Lord Chandra Dev, also known as Chandra or Soma, is the revered Hindu deity associated with the Moon. In Hindu tradition, Chandra Dev represents the cool, luminous beauty of the night sky and is closely connected with the mind, emotions, intuition, peace, and nourishment. His gentle light has inspired countless prayers, stories, festivals, and spiritual practices throughout Indian culture.

According to Hindu scriptures, Chandra Dev is regarded as one of the Navagrahas, the nine planetary deities who have an important place in Hindu astrology. He is traditionally associated with the mind, feelings, imagination, memory, sensitivity, and inner calm. The Moon’s changing phases are also seen as a symbol of the continuous cycles of life, reminding devotees that change is a natural part of existence.

Chandra Dev is often depicted as a handsome and radiant deity with a peaceful appearance, riding a chariot drawn by white horses or sometimes by an antelope. His association with Soma, the sacred divine essence mentioned in Vedic literature, further connects him with vitality, nourishment, and spiritual energy. The Moon is also considered an important symbol of purity and serenity because of its soothing light.

One of the most well-known stories associated with Chandra Dev concerns his marriage to the 27 Nakshatras, who are traditionally identified as the daughters of Daksha Prajapati. These Nakshatras correspond to the lunar mansions through which the Moon travels. Chandra, however, was especially devoted to Rohini, which led to Daksha’s displeasure and a curse that caused the Moon to wane. Later, through divine intervention, the curse was modified, giving rise to the waxing and waning phases of the Moon.
