    Purana is a broad category of ancient Indian religious and cultural literature that preserves stories, teachings, traditions, genealogies, cosmology, pilgrimage accounts, and descriptions of deities and sacred places. The word Purana is commonly understood as referring to ancient or traditional narratives. Puranic literature has played an important role in preserving and communicating Hindu religious ideas through accessible stories and teachings.

    The traditional eighteen Mahapuranas include texts such as the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, Shiva Purana, Markandeya Purana, Devi Bhagavata Purana, Skanda Purana, and Garuda Purana. There are also many Upapuranas and other related works. Different Puranas focus on different deities, traditions, philosophies, and sacred histories.

    Puranas discuss subjects such as creation and dissolution of the universe, Dharma, Karma, devotion, avatars, kings and sages, sacred geography, festivals, pilgrimage, rituals, and spiritual knowledge. Stories of Rama, Krishna, Shiva, Devi, Vishnu, Ganesha, and many other divine figures are preserved and expanded through Puranic traditions.

    The Puranas have greatly influenced Indian culture, temple traditions, festivals, devotional practices, literature, art, and storytelling. They continue to serve as important sources for understanding Hindu religious traditions and cultural heritage.
