“चतुर्भुज भगवान की छत्रछाया में मिलता है जीवन को सच्चा सुख और शांति।”

― Chaturbhuj Temple

It is located in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was constructed during the 10th century by the Chandela dynasty, between 1100 and 1150 AD. The Chandela kings were great patrons of art and architecture, and the temple was built as a symbol of devotion to Lord Vishnu. It originally served as a royal temple and is one of the largest in the Khajuraho group of temples.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is significant as it houses the idol of Lord Vishnu in his Chaturbhuj (four-armed) form, symbolizing protection, power, and benevolence.
It is an important pilgrimage site, particularly for Vaishnavites (followers of Lord Vishnu).
The temple also reflects the height of medieval temple architecture and the spiritual ethos of that era.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in the Nagara style of architecture, characteristic of northern India.

It features a tall shikhara (spire) that rises vertically, symbolizing the mythical Mount Meru.

The temple has a rectangular plan with a sanctum (garbhagriha) housing the idol, a vestibule (antarala), and a spacious hall (mandapa) for devotees.

Sculptural work is comparatively simpler compared to other Khajuraho temples but is elegant and refined.

The temple stands on a high platform, emphasizing its grandeur and sanctity.
