Saptashrungi Devi Temple

Saptashrungi Devi Temple is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site located about 60 km from Nashik, Maharashtra, atop one of the seven peaks forming the Saptashrungi—the “seven hills”.

“जहाँ विठोबा का नाम गूंजता है, वहाँ भक्ति स्वयं नृत्य करने लगती है।”

― Vitthal Temple

t is considered one of the three and a half Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra and among the 51 Shakti Peethas across India, marking where the right arm of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen.

Mythological Significance & History

This sacred shrine is dedicated to Goddess Saptashrungi, a powerful form of Durga. The idol is believed to be swayambhu (self-manifested), carved naturally on a rock face inside a cave . In Devi Mahatmya, she is portrayed as Mahalakshmi. She appears with eighteen arms, each holding a divine weapon bestowed to vanquish demons—Trishul, Chakra, Shankha, and others
Pilgrims believe that the Devi was created from Brahma’s kamandalu and took form to slay Mahishasura upon the Saptashrungi hills . Legends also link this site to sage Markandeya, who is said to have composed part of the Devi Mahatmya here

Significance of the Temple

Recognized as a major Shakti Peetha, drawing pilgrims from across Maharashtra and beyond.
The chief festival celebrated is Chaitrotsav, starting from Rama Navami and culminating on Chaitra Poornima, attracting hundreds of thousands—near 1 million—during peak days.
Other festivals like Navratri and Dussehra are also observed enthusiastically.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is a striking two-storied shrine built against the rock face, with the sanctum in a cave on the upper floor.

The idol, around 8–10 feet tall, is smothered in sindoor (vermilion), creating a vivid saffron appearance. It is adorned with rich ornaments and robes changed daily by priests.

The complex includes around 500 steps, carved into the rocky slope in 1710 by Umabai Dabhade, featuring carvings of Rama, Hanuman, Radha-Krishna, Dattatreya, and a tortoise.

Modern additions include a funicular trolley (ropeway) for pilgrims, community halls, queue galleries, and additional support structures
