Pisharikavu Temple

Pisharikavu Temple, nestled in Anakkulam (Koyilandy), Kollam—around 30 km from Kozhikode in northern Kerala—is a revered shrine devoted to Goddess Bhadrakali, a fierce and protective form of the Divine Mother.

“पिशरिकावु की देवी केवल मूर्ति नहीं, शक्ति का वह रूप हैं जो भक्तों के जीवन को दिशा देती हैं।”

― Pisharikavu Temple

It also houses a shrine to Lord Shiva. The temple is administered by the Malabar Devaswom Board.

Mythological Significance & History

Legend tells of the Ettuveettil (merchant) families from southern Kerala who settled in Kollam. A devotee among them, through intense penance, was blessed in a dream by Goddess Porkali (Bhadrakali) with a mystical sword, “Nandhakam,” instructing him to worship it. He brought this sacred sword north, establishing a temple—later known as Pisharikavu—where both Bhadrakali and Shiva are worshipped.

Significance of the Temple

Eventually, these merchant families migrated to Koyilandy, drawn by a divine sign—cows and tigers drinking together in harmony. They purchased land from the local king, built the temple there, and preserved the worship traditions surrounding the Nandhakam sword.
The temple holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, symbolizing divine protection, prosperity, and the enduring power of faith.
