Matangeshwar Temple, Khajuraho

Matangeshwar Temple

The Matangeshwar Temple is one of the most prominent shrines in the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Madhya Pradesh. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is unique because it is the only temple in Khajuraho where daily worship is still performed, while most other temples are preserved as monuments.

ॐ नमः शिवाय

― Matangeshwar Temple

The temple enshrines a self-manifested (swayambhu) Shivling.

Mythological Significance & History

Built around 10th–11th century CE, during the reign of the Chandela dynasty.
Unlike other Khajuraho temples that are adorned with intricate carvings, the Matangeshwar Temple is relatively simple in design, which makes it distinct.
It has been an active place of worship for over 1000 years, and is believed to have been used for tantric practices in ancient times.
The name Matangeshwar is derived from Sage Matanga, a revered sage in Hindu tradition.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is famous for its 8-feet high Shiva Lingam, one of the tallest in India.
It is considered extremely auspicious to worship here, especially during Mahashivratri, when thousands of devotees from across the country visit for darshan and rituals.
The Lingam is said to represent infinite cosmic energy and the eternal presence of Lord Shiva.
Unlike the erotic sculptures of other Khajuraho temples, this temple focuses entirely on spiritual devotion and simplicity.

Architecture of the Temple

Built in the Nagara style, but simpler compared to other Khajuraho temples.

The temple has:

  • A Garbhagriha (sanctum) housing the massive Lingam.
  • A small Mandapa (hall) for devotees.
  • A Shikhara (tower) that rises above the sanctum.

The absence of ornate carvings gives it a plain yet powerful spiritual atmosphere.

The temple stands close to the Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho.
