Mythological Significance & History

Legend rooted in the Mahabharata era tells that Maharishi Vyasa and Sage Viswamitra, seeking peace after the Kurukshetra war, settled in the serene Dandaka forest. Delighted by the tranquility, Vyasa meditated here—it became known as Vasara, now Basara.
Historically, the temple was established by Bijialudu, a 6th-century Karnataka king. In the 17th century, a chieftain from Nandagiri (now Nanded) restored the idols after their destruction .

It is especially sought after for Akshara Abhyasam—a ceremonial initiation of young children into formal education, where they first write letters before the deity.
Uniquely, the temple enshrines the divine trinity—Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Kali—making Basara a rare tri-deity abode
