Mythological Significance & History

The history of Dirgheswari Temple dates back to ancient times and is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. According to legends, this temple is a Shakti Peetha, where it is believed that parts of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva carried her body across the land.
The present structure of the temple was built during the Ahom dynasty rule in the 17th century under the reign of King Swargadeo Siva Singha. Since then, the temple has been a significant center of Durga worship, where rituals and sacrifices were performed during Durga Puja and other festivals.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is regarded as one of the most important Shakti Peeths of Assam.
Goddess Durga is worshipped here in her fierce form, believed to protect devotees from evil and grant strength, prosperity, and blessings.
The temple is especially significant during Durga Puja and Navratri, when devotees gather in large numbers for grand celebrations.
It is also a prominent site for Tantrik practices and spiritual rituals in Assam.

The temple reflects Ahom architectural style combined with traditional Hindu temple elements.

It is constructed with stone and brick, with beautifully carved walls and sculptures.

The sanctum houses the idol of Maa Durga, adorned with flowers, sindoor, and traditional Assamese decorations.

The temple is built on a hillock, giving a panoramic view of the Brahmaputra River.

The premises also include smaller shrines dedicated to other deities, along with open spaces where rituals and sacrifices are performed.
