Badrinath is the fourth and final stop in the Char Dham Yatra (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath) and is also part of the original Char Dham (Badrinath, Rameswaram, Dwarka, Puri) established by Adi Shankaracharya.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple has ancient origins dating back to the Vedic era, and is mentioned in texts like the Vishnu Purana and Skanda Purana.
The current temple structure was established in the 8th century CE by Adi Shankaracharya, who discovered a black stone idol of Lord Badrinarayan in the Alaknanda River and installed it in a cave near Tapt Kund.
Over time, kings from the Garhwal dynasty, especially during the 17th century, renovated and expanded the temple.
Despite being located in a seismically active and avalanche-prone area, the temple has stood firm with several restorations.

Significance of the Temple

Badrinath is considered the holiest Vishnu temple and is one of the 108 Divya Desams – the sacred abodes of Vishnu as per Tamil Vaishnavite tradition.
Lord Vishnu is believed to have meditated here for thousands of years, with Goddess Lakshmi shielding him from cold in the form of a Badri tree.
Pilgrimage to Badrinath is said to cleanse sins and grant moksha (liberation).
The temple is open for only six months (May to November) each year due to heavy snowfall.
