Mythological Significance & History

The temple is very ancient, believed to date back over 1500 years.
Legend of King Nala plays a central role: King Nala was said to have suffered due to Shani’s malefic influence. He prayed here and took a dip in the temple tank (called Nala Theertham), and was relieved of his afflictions. Because of this, devotees believe immersion in the tank can wash away misfortunes and “Shani dosha.”
The temple appears in ancient Tamil Saiva hymns (Tevaram) and has been glorified by saint‑poets like Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar.

Significance of the Temple

It is considered one of the most important shrines for worshipping Lord Shani. Devotees come especially on Saturdays (the day ruled by Shani) to perform pujas.
Taking a holy dip in Nala Theertham is believed to purge sins and reduce suffering from Shani’s adverse influences.
Specific remedies and rituals like Abhishekam of Shani, special oil offerings, lighting lamps with sesame (gingelly) oil, Navagraha Shanti Homam, etc., are performed here to mitigate Saturn’s negative effects.
The temple is part of the Navagraha pilgrimage circuit in Tamil Nadu / Puducherry, making it an important spiritual spot for those interested in astrology and traditional remedies.

Architecture of the Temple

The architecture is traditional Dravidian style, with a large rajagopuram (gateway tower), mandapams (pillared halls), and multiple shrines.

Main shrine is for Dharbaranyeswarar, a form of Lord Shiva. There is also a separate sanctum/shrine for Lord Shani (Saturn).

The sacred tank Nala Theertham is inside the temple premises. The tank is important both in legend and ritual — devotees take bath before worship.

Idols and images of various deities in the corridors include Shiva, Parvati, and many other gods and sages. Also statues or representations of King Nala too.
