Mythological Significance & History

The temple was built in 1729 AD by Raja Bharamalla Rao, following a dream revelation to his brother, who discovered the self-manifested linga in the forest. Villagers first constructed a small temple that grew into the present structure.
Taraknath is regarded as an Ugra (fierce) form of Shiva, known to have drunk venom during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), and is considered consort to Bhagwati Tara, with whom true devotees are believed to attain moksha.

Significance of the Temple

Devotees flock here seeking divine blessings, inner peace, and fulfillment of their wishes. The adjacent Dudhpukur tank, believed to be blessed, is used for ritual dips to enhance the efficacy of prayers.
The temple draws enormous crowds during Shivaratri, the Gajan festival, and throughout the Sravana month, particularly on Mondays, which are considered especially auspicious.
