Suryanar Kovil is a renowned Hindu temple located near Kumbakonam in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Navagraha (nine planets) temples and is uniquely dedicated to Surya, the Sun God — the only one of its kind in Tamil Nadu where Surya is the presiding deity.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple follows Dravidian architecture, with a tall five-tiered Rajagopuram (entrance tower) and beautiful sculptural details.

The main shrine houses Surya Bhagavan with his consorts Usha and Pratyusha.

There are individual shrines for each of the other Navagrahas, all positioned to face Surya’s sanctum.

The temple complex includes mandapams (pillared halls) and a sacred tank (Surya Pushkarini) used for ritual bathing., Gopis, or other deities, depending on tradition.

By Road: The temple is 15 km from Kumbakonam and 20 km from Mayiladuthurai. It is well-connected by local buses and taxis.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Aduthurai, located just 2 km from the temple.

By Air: The closest airport is Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) International Airport, about 100 km away.
