History of the Temple

The temple dates to the Vedic era, with its original name being Surajpur, located near the ancient Saraswati River. It was built near an old fort-citadel that hosted the temple complex.

According to historians, the temple was destroyed during Timur’s or Mahmud of Ghazni’s invasion, leaving the Kund in a dilapidated state.

The site is also referenced by Al-Biruni in his 11th-century work Kitab-ul-Hind, indicating its importance even in medieval times.
