Mythological Significance & History

The temple’s history dates back over 2000 years, with mentions in the Puranas such as the Varaha Purana and Bhavishyottara Purana.
According to legend, Lord Vishnu descended to earth as Venkateswara to save mankind from the trials of Kali Yuga.
The temple gained prominence during the reign of Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, and Vijayanagara kings, who expanded and enriched it.
The Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya donated immense wealth and jewelry, much of which still adorns the deity today.
Today, the temple is managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

Significance of the Temple

Considered the Kaliyuga Vaikuntha, where Lord Vishnu resides to bless devotees.

Devotees often offer their hair as an act of surrender, known as Mokku (tonsure).
It is one of the Divya Desams (108 sacred Vishnu temples praised by the Alwars).
The Laddu prasadam given here is world-famous and holds a GI tag.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is built in Dravidian architecture, with a towering Gopuram (entrance tower) and richly carved stone structures.

The Ananda Nilayam Vimanam (gold-plated dome) above the sanctum is one of the most striking features.
