Siddhivinayak Temple

The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is one of the most famous and richest temples in India, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Located in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, this temple is visited by millions of devotees annually, including celebrities and politicians.

“सिद्धिविनायक के चरणों में जो झुका, उसकी हर मनोकामना पूर्ण हुई।”

― Siddhivinayak Temple

The temple is especially revered for fulfilling wishes, and hence Ganesha here is lovingly called “Navasacha Ganapati” (the one who fulfills vows).

Mythological Significance & History

The original temple was constructed on 19 November 1801 by a contractor named Laxman Vithu Patil, funded by a wealthy woman named Deubai Patil, who had no children and wished that Ganesha bless other childless women.
Initially, it was a small structure with a simple brick dome. Over the years, due to increasing devotion and donations, the temple underwent several renovations and expansions.
The present form of the temple complex was completed in the 20th century, transforming it into a major religious and architectural landmark in Mumbai.

Significance of the Temple

Siddhivinayak means “Ganesha who grants success.”
The temple is believed to grant wishes, especially when one prays with sincere faith.
Tuesdays are considered most auspicious, and long queues of devotees can be seen waiting for darshan.
The temple is a major pilgrimage site, drawing devotees from all over the world.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple is a multi-storied complex with a gold-plated dome over the sanctum.

The idol of Lord Ganesha is carved out of a single black stone, around 2.5 feet high and 2 feet wide, with the trunk curving to the right (a rare form).

The deity has four arms (Chaturbhuj), holding a lotus, axe, modak (sweet), and rosary.

The temple also houses idols of Riddhi and Siddhi, goddesses representing prosperity and spiritual power.

The inner sanctum is surrounded by marble and gold, giving it a royal and divine appearance.
