Duty

Duty

What exactly is your duty? Let me summarise it for you. First, tend your parents with love and reverence and gratitude. Second, speak the truth and act virtuously. Third, whenever you have a few moments to spare, repeat the name of the Lord, with the form in your mind. Fourth, never indulge in talking ill of others or try to discover faults in others. And, finally, do not cause pain to others, in any form.Equally important is the balance of duties — to oneself, family, society, and the environment. Neglecting one’s health while working tirelessly for others is not wise, just as ignoring family while focusing solely on career is not sustainable. True fulfillment comes when one can harmoniously fulfill duties in all spheres of life.

In modern times, the concept of duty is sometimes overshadowed by the pursuit of rights and personal freedoms. While rights are important, they come with corresponding responsibilities. For example, the right to free speech carries the duty to use it wisely and not harm others. In this way, duty serves as a compass that keeps personal freedom aligned with social harmony.

People who perform their duties without expectation of reward, and with dedication and humility, are often admired and respected. Great leaders, teachers, soldiers, and caregivers are remembered not just for their achievements, but for their sense of duty and selfless service. They inspire others to rise above selfishness and contribute meaningfully to the world.
