Shri Nagapooshani Temple Shakti Peetha

Shri Nagapooshani Amman Temple, located on Nainativu Island (also known as Manipallavam) in Sri Lanka, is one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas. According to sacred tradition, this is the place where the silambu (anklet) of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen after her self-immolation and the subsequent dismemberment of her body by Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra.

Here, Devi is worshipped as Nagapooshani (the Serpent-Adorned Goddess) and Lord Shiva as Rakshaseshwar (or Nayinaar Shiva).

Mythological Significance

The temple is rooted in both Hindu and local Sri Lankan legends. It is believed that:
This island was mentioned in the Mahabharata and Manimekalai as a powerful divine place.
The anklet (a symbol of feminine strength and movement) of Sati fell here, giving the island a serpentic energy, often associated with Kundalini Shakti.
The word “Nagapooshani” means “One who wears serpents as ornaments”, indicating the cosmic energy flow and protection symbolized by snakes in Hinduism.

  • The shrine of Nagapooshani Amman adorned with serpentine ornaments and red sarees.
  • Several serpent motifs and naga idols throughout the premises.

The temple sits near the turquoise Indian Ocean, giving it a breathtaking sacred coastal ambiance.
