Meaning:
1: (Salutations to Devi Banashankari) She Who is the Power of Maya
behind this Creation and the Destroyer of the demons Madhu and Kaitabha
(by churning them in the battle), She Who is the Destroyer to the very
root of the demon Mahishasura,
2: She Who whirled round the demons Dhumrekshana (Dhumralochana), Chanda
and Munda in the battle (and finally Destroyed them), She Who Destroyed
the demon Raktabija by consuming him totally (each drop of his
blood),
3: She Who is the Parashakti and the Destroyer of the demons Shumbha and
Nishumbha (by splitting them apart), She Who is the Supreme
Siddhalakshmi,

fragrant Kasturi ( the fragrance which is the pride of the Musk Deer of
Kashmir ); I Remember You Who Grant Fearlessness to the Three Worlds and

Scriptures and Shield; and also sporting a Skull Cup and Damaru (Drum of
Shiva).

5.1: Long ago there was a Great Daitya (Demon) known as Durgama, who
became very Powerful and Dreadful,
5.2: He was Born in the Lineage of Hiranyaksha and was the Son of Ruru;
he was very Wicked,
6.1: He thought: The Power of Devas is because of the Vedas, whose
destruction is indeed the destruction of the Devas,
6.2: By Attaining that (i.e. the Vedas) will indeed make me like them
(i.e. the Devas); there is no doubt in this.

7.1: Reflecting thus, he went to the Himalayas for performing Tapas,

8.1: For Thousand years he performed Intense Tapas (Penance).
8.2: The Energy that emanated from his Tapas greatly Heated the Worlds
of both the Devas and the Asuras (Demons).

11.1: Sri Brahma said: I am Pleased with your unparalled Tapas (Penance)

from his samadhi (meditation),
12.1: After worshipping Sri Brahma, he asked for the Boon: “Please give
me the Vedas, O Sureswara”,
12.2: “Give me all the Vedic Mantras in the Three Worlds which are with
the Brahmins and the Devas.

Meaning:
63.1: He (i.e. Demon Durgama) placed his Chariot in Front of the Chariot
of Mahadevi,
63.2: Then ensued a Great Fight between the Devi and the Daitya,
64.1: The Fight continued till two Praharas (one Prahara is
approximately three hours) and the intensity of the fight created terror
in the hearts of all,
64.2: Then the Devi released fifteen exceedingly Powerful Arrows.
चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहान्बाणेनैकेन सारथिम् ।
द्वाभ्यां नेत्रे भुजौ द्वाभ्यां ध्वजमेकेन पत्रिणा ॥६५॥
पञ्चभिर्हृदयं तस्य विव्याध जगदम्बिका ।
ततो वमन्स रुधिरं ममार पुर ईशितुः ॥६६॥

Meaning:
65.1: By Four Arrows Devi pierced the four Vahanas of his Chariot (i.e.
the four Horses); by One Arrow the Sarathi (i.e. Charioteer),
65.2: By Two Arrows the two Eyes; by another Two Arrows his two Arms; by
One Arrow Devi Felled the Flag of the Chariot,
66.1: And with Five Arrows Jagadambika pierced his Heart,
66.2: Then vomitting blood died the master of the city.
तस्य तेजस्तु निर्गत्य देवीरूपे विवेश ह ।
हते तस्मिन्महावीर्ये शान्तमासीज्जगत्त्रयम् ॥६७॥

Meaning:
67.1: Then his Spirit came out in the form of light and merged with the
form of Devi,
67.2: The Powerful Mighty demon being Killed, Peace prevailed in the
Three Worlds,
68.1: Then Sri Brahma and all other Devas started Eulogizing the
Jagadambika,
68.2: Standing in Front of the Devi, Who is the Bearer and Ruler of all,
they Praised Her with great Devotion and voice choked with Emotion.

The Devas said:
69.1: O Parameshwari, You are the One Cause behind the Delusions and
Transformations in the World,
69.2: Salutations to the Auspicious Shakambhari, Salutations to the One
with Hundred Eyes (Shatakshi),
70.1: Salutations to the One Who is Proclaimed by all the Upanishads and
Who is the destroyer of Durgamasura,
70.2: Salutations to the Auspicious Maheshwari Who Abides in the
Interior of the Five Koshas (i.e. the five sheaths of the body).
चेतसा निर्विकल्पेन यां ध्यायंति मुनीश्वराः ।
प्रणवार्थस्वरूपां तां भजामो भुवनेश्वरीम् ॥७१॥
अनन्तकोटिब्रह्माण्डजननीं दिव्यविग्रहाम् ।

Meaning:
71.1: Salutations to Her, Who is the Consciousness which is free from
Change (Nirvikalpa), and Who is Meditated upon by the Great Sages,
71.2: Salutations to Her Who is the Embodiment of Pranava (Om); We
Worship the Bhuvaneshwari (the Goddess of the Universe),
72.1: Salutations to Her, Who is the Mother of innumerable Millions of
Brahmandas (Universes), and Who has a Divine Form,
72.2: Salutations to Her Who is the Mother of Sri Brahma, Sri Vishnu and
Others, and to Whom all Bhavas (Devotional Feelings) Bow down.

Meaning:
75.1: Then the Devi, Graciously Pleased, brought back the Vedas and gave
it to them,
75.2: She then, the Cuckoo-voiced one, specially addressed the Brahmins,
76.1: The Vedas are like the Superior parts of My Body, so take Special
Care of them,
76.2: Without Her (i.e. the Vedas), what Calamity can arise, you have
seen just now.
पूज्याऽहं सर्वदा सेव्या युष्माभि सर्वदैव हि ।
नात परतरं किंचित्कल्याणायोपदिश्यते ॥७७॥
पठनीयं ममैतद्धि माहात्म्यं सर्वदोत्तमम् ।
तेन तुष्टा भविष्यामि हरिष्यामि तथाऽऽपद ॥७८॥

Meaning:
77.1: Worship Me always, and Serve Me always, all of You in this manner,
77.2: There is nothing greater in bestowing Good Fortune than this
Instruction,
78.1: Read this, My Mahatmyam, always, which is most Excellent,
78.2: By It, I will become Pleased and Manifest and take away your
Misfortunes in this manner.
दुर्गमासुरहन्त्रींत्वाद्दुर्गेति मम नाम यः ।
