Rudreswar Temple

Rudreswar Temple, also known as Rudreswar Devalaya, is a revered Shiva temple situated on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River in North Guwahati. Surrounded by natural beauty and cultural significance.

ॐ नमः शिवाय

― Rudreswar Temple

It is both a place of worship and a historical landmark of Assam.

Mythological Significance & History

The temple was constructed in 1749 CE by Ahom King Pramatta Singha in memory of his father, Swargadeo Rudra Singha (Sukhrungphaa).
It is believed to be built at the very site where King Rudra Singha passed away, making it a temple as well as a memorial.
Today, it is preserved as a heritage site under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Significance of the Temple

The temple enshrines the Rudreswar Shiva Linga, worshipped as a powerful form of Lord Shiva.
It symbolizes both spiritual devotion and filial love, as it was built by a son to honor his father.
Rituals, prayers, and cultural gatherings make it a spiritual hub for devotees of Lord Shiva.
The temple is also regarded as an important Ahom-era monument, blending faith with heritage.

Architecture of the Temple

The temple showcases a unique blend of Ahom and Mughal architectural styles.

Built on a raised square platform with circumambulatory passages (pradakshinapatha).

The sanctum (garbhagriha) is housed underground, with advanced ventilation and drainage systems.

Adjacent sacred ponds include:

  • Konwari Pukhuri (for princesses)
  • Hiloidari Pukhuri (for soldiers/artillerymen)

The temple resembles a Mughal-style mausoleum but is dedicated to Lord Shiva, making it architecturally rare.
