Rameshwar Mandir

The Ramanathaswamy Temple, also known as Rameshwaram Temple, is an ancient and revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

“जय हो रामेश्वर! जिनके दर्शन से पाप भी पुण्य में बदल जाते हैं।”

― Rameshwar Mandir

It is located on Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu, India, and is celebrated as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, making it a key pilgrimage site in Hinduism.

Mythological Significance & History

Legend says Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here to atone for killing Ravana, installing a sand lingam by Sita (Ramalinga). Later, Hanuman brought a Jyotirlinga (Vishwalinga) from Mount Kailash, and both lingams are still central to the temple rituals
This temple is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage, highly revered by Vaishnavites, Shaivites, and Smartas alike.
Devotees believe that bathing in the surrounding 64 teerthams—especially the renowned Agni Theertham—and performing rituals here can cleanse sins and lead to spiritual merit

The temple covers around 15 acres, blending Dravidian and Nayaka architectural styles

It features the world’s longest temple corridor—over 1.2 km long, supported by more than 1,212 intricately carved pillars

Majestic gopurams (gateway towers) adorn both east and west entrances, rising to approximately 53 m (east) and 45 m (west)

The temple complex includes several mandapams (halls) such as Nandi, Kalyana, Setupati, Anuppu, and Sukravara mandapams, along with shrines for Parvathavardhini (Parvati), Vishalakshi, Vishnu, and Ganesha

Inside, there are two Shiva lingams—the Vishwalinga (from Kailash) and Ramalinga (made by Sita); devotees worship the former before the latter
