Poovattoor Bhagavathy Temple

Poovattoor Bhagavathy Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located in Poovattoor village, within Kottarakara taluk of Kollam district, Kerala. The temple enshrines the Goddess Bhagavathy and lends cultural and spiritual prominence to the region.

Its name is derived from “Poo Attoor”, meaning “the land where a flower fell”, inspired by a local legend

Mythological Significance & History

According to legend, Goddess Bhagavathy of Poovattoor and the deity of Pattazhi were sisters. The elder sister tossed a handful of flowers and told the younger to settle where the flowers landed—which happened at Poovattoor.
The sacred site is ancient, deeply woven into local oral history, and integral to Poovattoor’s identity.

The temple stands as a major spiritual center in the Kulakkada Panchayat, with its annual festival drawing large participation
Festival highlights include:
Aalp Ezhunnallathu: a procession featuring miniature plantain and coconut leaf structures adorned with lamps
Kettukazcha: the presentation of artful temple effigies
Ponnin Thirumudi: the worship of the deity’s golden crown.
The vibrant celebrations often feature fireworks (Kambam) and other ritual performances.

By Road: Poovattoor is located approximately 3.5 km from Kulakkada, with frequent bus service from Kollam city. Local transport like taxis and autos are also readily available.

By Train: The nearest major rail station is Kollam Railway Station, about 28–30 km away. Kottarakkara station is also nearby (approx. 8 km) and often used for closer access.

By Air: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the closest at around 82 km distance.
