Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir

Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir, nestled in the serene hill station of Matheran, Maharashtra, is the oldest Shiva temple in the region.

“माथेरान की हरियाली में बसा है जो शिवधाम – वह पिशारनाथ महादेव मंदिर है, जहाँ आत्मा को शांति मिलती है।”

― Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, locally revered as Pisharnath—the village deity—it’s renowned as a place of tranquil, spiritual retreat amid lush greenery and calm surroundings.

Mythological Significance & History

Ancient Origins: The exact age of the temple remains unknown. The Shiva Linga housed here is swayambhu (self-manifested), forming a distinct ‘L’ shape and covered in vermilion (sindoor), making it deeply sacred to locals.
Cultural Importance: The deity serves as the Grama Devata (village god), invoked at the start of ceremonies and during important family occasions. Devotees also visit seeking protection from negative forces—a belief deeply woven into the lore of the temple’s forested setting.
